Utopia Keyboardist GLASYS To Release New Single Feat. Todd Rundgren

GLASYS new single “People” featuring Todd Rundgren to be released on July 26th

Portland, OR - GLASYS (Gil Assayas) is a pianist, synthesist, producer and vocalist who delivers intricate virtuosic keyboard parts, electronic soundscapes and impassioned vocals in one package that combines his many influences including Electronic music, Alternative Rock, Jazz and Classical music.

Since relocating to the US from Israel three years ago, GLASYS has been endorsed by major gear manufacturers such as Nord Keyboards, 64 Audio, Sequential and Spectrasonics, has developed a large social media presence with over two million total video views, has been featured on the GRAMMY's website, and has had his song “The Pressure” played at a Portland Trailblazers NBA game. Recently, he was discovered by Hip-Hop giant T-Pain on reddit and the two are now collaborating. GLASYS is also currently touring with legendary 70s-80s band Utopia (led by Todd Rundgren).

GLASYS released his debut EP “The Pressure” in September 2016. His first full-length album “Defective Humanity” was successfully funded on Kickstarter and will be released on August 2nd, 2019. The new single “People” featuring Todd Rundgren will be released on July 25th.

Says GLASYS, “The inspiration for this song is human nature, and more specifically the way we humans are never truly satisfied with what we have and are always chasing something 'better' in life, be it success, more money, a new car, a relationship etc. I personally struggle a lot with living in the moment, and the song addresses that struggle.

“Ever since I wrote this song I thought that Todd would be perfect for it, but I wasn't sure if he'd have the time to collaborate seeing as he's so busy. I was very pleasantly surprised when I sent him a demo of the song and he replied 5 minutes later saying that he'd love to do it! He ended up recording his parts on tour (on a cruise ship, I believe). I didn't give him any specific instructions, just told him to add whatever he feels like adding. He recorded some great vocals, new harmonies and an awesome guitar solo that took the song to a new level. I'm extremely grateful for his support and really happy with the results.”

Check out the premiere of GLASYS new single “People”:
http://abcnewsradioonline.com/music-news/2019/7/24/exclusive-listen-to-new-song-by-glasys-aka-utopia-touring-ke.html

GLASYS forthcoming album “Defective Humanity” (to be released on August 2nd) is self produced and will include his best songs from the past 2-3 years. “I have a pretty active YouTube channel to which I upload improvisations and short musical ideas, so I was able to receive feedback from my viewers and develop their favorite tunes into full tracks. Not all the songs were created that way though, some are extremely personal and have never been heard by anyone, in any form. The album will contain both instrumental and vocal songs.”

GLASYS will also be playing keyboards on the forthcoming Tribute To The Beatles' White Album tour featuring Micky Dolenz (The Monkees), Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Jason Scheff (Chicago) and Joey Molland (Badfinger)! Musical Director: Joey Curatolo (the musical director of RAIN: A Tribute to The Beatles).

Here's what's been said about GLASYS:

“I've never seen anything like this in my life. Man. PM me if you wanna work together, bro. This is amazing!” - T-Pain

“A master at the keys, Israel instrumentalist Gil Assayas shares animated vocals with faultless keyboard and synth playing to make jazzy electronic you can't help but dance to.” - The Deli Portland

“From the first bar of the title track of GLASYS' debut EP 'The Pressure,' it is already clear that Gil Assayas is a musician of rare talent and skill. The Portland based Assayas is possessed of rather intimidating piano chops and assembled an impressive collective of musicians for the project.” - Jonathan Wilson, Northwest Music Scene.

“GLASYS, one of the best new acts to emerge out of Portland in quite some time. The brainchild of producer extraordinaire Gil Assayas, Glasys layers gorgeous keyboards on top of poppy, delicate vocals.” - Marissa Abruzzini, Tour Worthy.

Forthcoming shows:
July 27: Jack London Revue, Portland OR
August 2nd: Sunset Tavern, Seattle WA
August 10th: Hotel Cafe, Los Angeles CA
August 13th: Hotel Utah Saloon, San Francisco CA

Potter's Daughter to Release New Single "Blood and Water" Featuring Renaissance Legend Annie Haslam on August 8th!

The single will be available digitally, CD single and limited edition 7-inch vinyl!

NYC - Potter's Daughter will be releasing their new single “Blood and Water” featuring legendary Renaissance vocalist Annie Haslam on August 8, 2019! The single will be available digitally, CD single and limited edition 7-inch vinyl!

Potter's Daughter was formed in New York City while Dyanne Potter Voegtlin was studying classical piano performance at the Manhattan School of Music. A pupil of Robert Goldsand and Mike Longo, Dyanne searched for the marriage of classical theory and virtuosity with the freedom and innovation of jazz both in study and performance. Together with a rotating group of masters from many schools of music, Dyanne performed regularly in New York City, as well as in north-eastern Pennsylvania.

Now, joining forces with long-time friend, Amit Chatterjee, (producer, arranger, and guitarist), and Ian C. Voegtlin (composer, guitarist, and saxophonist), they are looking forward to releasing their first single, “Blood and Water,” featuring guest artist Annie Haslam. This single marks the beginning of the band's evolution from the acoustic and eclectic sound of their debut album, “The Blind Side.” Embracing more elements of fusion and progressive rock, Potter's Daughter's “New Prog” philosophy creates a listening experience of complex melodic composition, emotional vocal leads and harmonies, and searing solos.

Says Dyanne, “Annie Haslam is not just the #1 female legend in Prog, she is also an exceptionally warm-hearted and generous woman. Her natural musicality shines through every note she so beautifully and expressively sings. It has been both an honor and a pleasure working with her.”

“On first hearing of 'Blood and Water' I was struck by its unusual and haunting melody and Dyanne's exquisite voice. To be a part of it was truly a wonderful experience.” - Annie Haslam

Instrumental New Age Review: Masako-Underwater Whisperer

Release Date: June 21, 2019
Label: Masako Music

I found Masako through her Piano Sanctuary release.  And I found a sanctuary through her music. Now two years have passed and Underwater Whisperer is delivered. If you look at the track titles it all lines up with the album title and colorful illustration on the cover.

What I see is a young lady communicating with her surroundings (arms raised to get attention?), the ocean, the polar bear, an iceberg, and sea creatures. Masako communicates with her music but what she is trying to say as well is very important. The thought process here evolves around nature and perhaps a cry for some reasoning around what is happening to the polar ice cap. It is melting away with rising sea temperatures.  Anyone with any sense of reality can see what is going on with our environment. And what is accomplished here is a lot more than a whisper.

You will enjoy 11 tracks of instrumental elegance from the fingers of Masako. The production values are excellent when an artist goes to Will Ackerman’s Imaginary Road Studios and Tom Eaton provides all the meticulous production work. They are two of the busiest men in the music business.

I think the entire album delivers on the promise of tranquility and a meditative or contemplative state of consciousness. Two tracks in particular were my favorites. “Sea Pearls” is 7 minutes and 20 seconds of pure piano bliss.  And “The Deep” is the one I chose to add to my Spotify New Age Music Reviews playlist. It is a step away from the norm, a very different, atmospheric ambient haunting track, as she puts aside the acoustic keys and opts for the electric sound and the perfected vocals of Noah Wilding. I loved it because it is outside of the comfort zone if you will of the rest of the album. Masako takes a chance and comes out the other end triumphantly, offering another side of her musical repertoire that will get long time listeners some ideas of possibly hearing more of that type of approach and sound on the next release.

The piano alone can say a lot but when you add the cello, flute, Chapman Stick, wind synthesizer (an interesting instrument), and percussion it is like a small orchestra adding layers to the one layer of piano. Together as one it can mesmerize and send you to dreamland within one track. It is a thing of beauty that can only be accomplished by a seasoned group of professionals covering every nook and cranny in a song in regards to musicianship and production.

It did not take long for Masako to become one of my favorite artists in the new age genre and with Underwater Whisperer my interest and respect for her music continues to grow wings and fly with her every step of the way.

JIRGA Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by AJ True Nominated "Best Music" in the Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards

Sydney, Australia - AJ True is a Sydney based musician known for his work as a co-founder and drummer of Psychobilly band Zombie Ghost Train from 2002-2008. As a composer, music producer, and musical director his music has been used in film, TV, radio & theatre. His recent credits for screen composition include: She Who Must Be Loved (dir. Erica Glynn, 2019), Truth Be Told; Lest We Forget (dir. Erica Glynn, 2018), JIRGA (dir. Benjamin Gilmour, 2017), Paramedico (dir. Benjamin Gilmour, 2012). In 2019 his JIRGA score was nominated ‘Best Music’ in the Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards (FCCA).

“Can you make the score sound like Ennio Morricone meets Giorgio Moroder in the Afghan desert?” This was one of the directions I got from Benjamin Gilmour when he asked me to compose the music for his latest Australian feature film, JIRGA. With those two references, this was a dream job for a composer.

Benjamin wanted a score that would be recognisable and as individual as the film itself. We aimed to achieve this with diverse and unconventional instrument combinations; Afghan rabab, tanbur, harmonium, electric guitars, vintage 70s synthesizers, cello drones through guitar distortion pedals, and a string quartet.

Benjamin was interested in steering away from typical film music with this score. He wanted a collection of music, strong enough to be a standalone piece of work, without sounding like ‘screen music’. I aimed to achieve this by composing themes away from the film. I made notes as I saw the rough cut then composed for a few weeks and sent off some possible themes to Ben. He would select his favourite pieces and we’d temp them into the film while it was being edited. As the film was refined, we’d tweak the cues to fit the scenes in more of a traditional way. This was a great way of working as it meant that music took its natural course in the development of compositional ideas and motifs.

It’s always interesting to be pushed into unknown territory and encouraged to take risks. Benjamin would send me obscure 70s electronic music that I had no idea existed (Ash Ra Tempel, Brainticket, Edward Artemiev). He would ask me to find weird synthesizers, experiment with unusual combinations of instruments, and try different production techniques. All traditional film instrumentation would need to be put aside, even our string quartet would be mixed in a way to make it sound like it was played by a synthesizer by our excellent music mixer, Dave Hammer.

In addition to vintage synthesizers, Benjamin and film producer John Maynard were interested in hearing a layer of drones under the other musical elements. We settled on cello (through distortion pedals), doubled with harmonium. These drone layers help create a feeling of tension that lasts through most of the film, it also grounds each cue in a tonal center, a sort of minimalist ‘basso continuo’.

JIRGA’S minimal, tension-based score utilizes recurring themes played by both western and non-western instruments performed by musicians from Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the USA.

The songs performed by cast members Sam Smith (Mike Wheeler) and Sher Alam Miskeen Ustad (the Taxi Driver) were their own arrangements, performed on location and recorded by Ben in Afghanistan. When Sam and Sher Alam sing and play songs for each other, unspoken connections are made, cultural differences are transcended and their music becomes a third character that unites and disarms. Only through the sharing of music are they able to finally connect and recognise each other through their veil of differences. In those desert scenes you can see this happening for real on screen. It’s a beautiful thing. When we weren’t talking about the work at hand, Ben and I had many conversations about music’s mysterious power to cross great divides, opening doors to knowledge, understanding and acceptance. Hopefully some part of the film’s message can find its way into the real world.

I’m proud of this film and the score, I hope you enjoy. - AJ True, July 14 2019

Lunden Reign's Laura Espinoza To Release New Solo Single "Follow Me to the Sun" Featured In The Award Winning Musical "American Stranger the Musical"!

Los Angeles - “Follow Me to the Sun” is a new single by songwriter/guitarist Laura Espinoza (of Laura Espinoza & Lunden Reign) and features Mindy Milburn on lead vocals, Miranda Miller on backing vocals & piano, Geoff Pearlman, Laura Espinoza & Julian Tomarin on guitars; Matt Denis on bass & Noel Jasso on drums. Produced by Geoff Pearlman (“Echo in the Canyon Band”), “Follow Me to the Sun” is one of the featured songs in the Hollywood Fringe Fest Encore Award winning musical “American Stranger the Musical” (music & book by Laura Espinoza).

The song is about someone who feels desperate & lonely after someone has left them; the reason is never revealed. This person then hopes they will find a way to reunite, but it may not be within earthly bounds.

“Seem so long since you drove away, standing out in a chill burns my naked face,
Morning gushes in a shallow wind, but the fire from your kiss keeps the flame within”

Featuring:

Laura Espinoza: Laura is a songwriter/guitarist, playwright, and TV producer. She is the primary songwriter for the critically acclaimed original alt rock band Laura Espinoza & Lunden Reign. Laura recently won a NARAS songwriting contest, exclusive to Grammy voting members where she participated in a private songwriting workshop with Busby, Rodney Jerkins, Shane Stevens and Sarah Hudson. She has performed on stage with Luis Maldonado (Train), Terri Nunn (Berlin), Dale Bozzio (Missing Persons) & Prescott Niles (The Knack), and started her career with Matt Sorum (Guns n' Roses) She has recorded at Capitol Records, Hollywood, Abbey Road, UK and is the host of “The Rock Radio Show” on KBU-FM, Malibu.

Mindy Milburn: Mindy has a passion for singing and music. She is originally from Cleveland Ohio and has sang for multiple bands as well as in musical theatre and original bands and is so grateful to be working with Laura Espinoza. Mindy is now living in Los Angeles and is the proud parent of two wonderful children.

Miranda Miller: Miranda is a classically trained pianist who started playing at age 4. At age 12, she joined her first rock band, Cherri Bomb, where she would get her first taste of the music industry as a rhythm guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist. Signed with Hollywood Records, this band released one EP and one studio album and played shows in America, Europe, and Australia. Later on, she was in alternative pop band Hey Violet!, signed to Capitol Records, and released another EP and studio album. She has been on stage opening for acts such as Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Bush, Staind, and 5 Seconds of Summer, and has performed in almost 20 countries. Miranda now teaches private piano, guitar, and vocal lessons and has directed multiple theatrical productions.

Laura Espinoza's “Follow Me to the Sun” will be available on Amazon, iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify and more on July 15, 2019

“American Stranger the Musical” recently received the “Hollywood Fringe Festival ENCORE! Award” as well as the “Better Lemons 'Sweet' Audience Review Award.” The musical is based on the music by Laura Espinoza; “American Stranger” is the story of three siblings, two of whom are learning to understand the third who is transitioning from their brother to their sister, now known as Mary. Rejection and intolerance plagues Mary - from society and from her parents who have disowned her. However, it is the loss of her beloved girlfriend, Dionne, that haunts her the most. America's growing cultural divide has made Mary a stranger in her own country. “American Stranger” features the acoustic versions of the songs of Laura Espinoza & London Reign.

Here's what the audience is saying:

“The music and singing were outstanding. Wonderful show, talented performers and great music. It’s so many people’s story, in many different ways. We are all just fumbling around, looking for love, looking for family. Trying to follow our hearts and survive.” - Lauren Peterson

“I own the record 'American Stranger” by the band Laura Espinoza & Lunden Reign and I really dig it.
I was very impressed with how Laura Espinoza, the song writer and guitarist of 'American Stranger,' brought her album to life with this beautiful musical.” - Michael Dinapoli

“What a beautiful gift this musical is! The writer had to know what a powerful message this would be, much needed yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Go see it and feel the love, confusion of being new in LA, and the message being sung beautifully by Delia Rawdon, Mindy Milburn, Miranda Miller with a great cast including Jacklyn Robinson, Scooby Ducati, Bill Melrose, and Sabrina Richmond. The writer, composer and guitarist Laura Espinoza has presented a musical that you cannot forget, ever!” -  Lisa Furuto

Contemporary New Age Instrumental Review: Louis Anthony deLise-Natural Light

Release Date: July 1, 2019
Label: Bocage Records

My very first journey into the music of Louis Anthony deLise proved to be quite special. Natural Light is a stunning recording. Right from the outset, I was mesmerized by this music.

Excerpt From Artist Website: Louis Anthony deLise is an award-winning composer, record producer, arranger, and conductor. His compositions for soloists and ensembles have been recorded and are often performed worldwide. His arranging and conducting work appear on albums alongside that of many of the world’s top pop artists including, Carlos Santana, Sheila E., Wynonna Judd, Kanye West, CeCe Winans, and Paul Shaffer.

That is enough to pique any music lovers’ interest I would think? With one look at the artwork on the cover of this CD, and I could tell the right message was being relayed to a perspective audience and more importantly to me, the next listener.

All of the instrumentation is incredibly good. Louis plays the acoustic piano, amongst other things, quite brilliantly. And it does not hurt to have on hand Jeff Oster (trumpet), Nancy Rumbel (oboe and English horn), Christine Hansen (flute and alto flute) and Marjam Ingolffson (cello) added to mix to complete each individual track with taste and preciseness.

“Spring Rain” was the first track that gave me the warm and fuzzy feelings of satisfaction. The rain in spring by definition brings the hope of a new day, sunshine and the coming of summer, flowers blooming and all the trees turning green. With added sounds of nature on the track, I felt like I was inside the song, living the moment within the time and space that mother nature does her work. It’s a beautiful thing to understand and accept how we are intrinsically linked to the earth and all living things.

“Autumn Twilight” brings another season as the leaves turn, the air gets crisper and the colors are vibrant along roadsides and in the mountains of the Northeast. I live it every year and absolutely love it. Ask any New Englander what is their favorite season and I bet they say the fall. Then, of course, the imminent old man winter comes in to freeze the earth and put our grand Mother into hibernation on “Winter’s Chill.” The progression of the tracks is perfect, in sync with the balance of nature and most certainly with this listener.

After all, this is the reason I was so taken right away listening to this album, its musical perfection as far as I am concerned. There probably is not a musician in the world that would say their music is perfect but from where I sit, all I needed to hear was the 11 tracks of new age instrumentals. The occasional elements of jazz painted in and around the canvas of this musical vision made it all even tastier. It is a picture I would want to look at more than once and so will you once you hear it!

Prog Legends Nektar Celebrate 50th Anniversary With New Studio Album "The Other Side"

New Kickstarter Campaign started offering rare Nektar memorabilia!

Nektar: The Legendary Rock Band are recording a new album! This is the first new studio album made in the United States since 1977!!

We put the old band back together to CELEBRATE the 50th ANNIVERSARY of NEKTAR!

The original members of Nektar; Derek “Mo” Moore, Ron Howden, and Mick Brockett are back. We've added Ryche Chlanda from Fireballet and the 78' band, Randy Dembo from the 2005 band, and newcomer and world-class keyboard player, Kendall Scott.

The music for our new album “The Other Side” comes from the 1978 era when we were writing in Mo's basement in Chatham, New Jersey. This music was put on pause for the last 40 YEARS and it's now time to release it with new input and fresh ideas. The music is growing exponentially as we continue rehearsing and writing and letting it take us to new heights.

Nektar has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the recording of the new album!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nektarmusic/nektars-new-studio-album-the-other-side

Nektar in the studio July 2019

What are next steps for Nektar?
The reason we are here on Kickstarter is to generate the necessary funds and freedom to do this album in a suitable manner without a record company. We would like to release a CD, a DVD on the “Making of the New Album,” and writing and tweaking of the music. A double-vinyl album, all with excellent artwork by our friend and collaborator, Helmut Wenske, the original artist in the tradition of classic Nektar. After the album is released, in 2020, we will make a Blu-Ray DVD with the light show so you, our fans, can have music and visuals that you can take home with you.

We also need to set up touring to bring the music and the visual light show to you throughout 2020. In order to give you, our fans, our unique experience, we need your help now!

In appreciation for your donations, Nektar would like to give back to you. Here are SOME of the items you will receive depending on the pledge you choose:
Autographed CD's and Advanced Digital Download MP3 of the new album “The Other Side”
Original 1970's Nektar Man Poster

Instrumental Piano/New Age Review: Michael Whalen-Cupid Blindfolded

Release Date: July 12, 2019
Label: Real Music

There is nothing better than an instrumental piano recording when you need to relax. I hear a lot of this music all year long and never tire of it because of the multitude of value it provides. It can offer total relaxation during a quiet time you have every day or evening, or provide beneficial focus and help you clear a cluttered mind, or simply invite you into a meditative state.

My introduction to Michael’s music was the 2018 release Kiss The Quiet. I thought that was an ingenious title for the recording and it fit the music like well-worn jeans. I think we have the same instance with the newest edition to his catalog, Cupid Blindfolded.

An artist like Michael Whalen is at the forefront of the Instrumental New Age/Piano genre. You have to be on top of your game to compete with similar artists and capture the imagination of the listeners.

For me, the first thing I take a good look at is the album cover. With the title being Cupid Blindfolded, that is the first thing you see. It is nothing that makes you think too hard or plays tricks on your eyes. Sometimes that is appropriate and is just right for the music, in this case, that is a perfect match.

Cupid may be blindfolded but if she opens her eyes, she can see through the thin red veil that is wrapped around her head. That is a clue as far as I am concerned. People, in general, may have a “veil” of some sort over their eyes but all it takes is for them to open their eyes to see right through it, right? This is a conceptual frame of mind I am coming from. Music and images tell a story and I have found that if there are no words set to the music, it can still relay a powerful message. As I always say, it is up to each listener to decide what the music means to them or could mean to them at first glance of the image.

Cupid Blindfolded is 10 tracks of exceptional solo instrumental piano music. The album has a steady flow to it, like a river after it rains, it moves right along with that sort of momentum. Each melody intrinsically connects to the next one, like mother nature at work in a musical sense of the word.

Talented ivory ticklers like Michael Whalen should have ample opportunities to license their music for a multitude of areas including soundtracks for commercials, documentaries, etc. I do want to stress that this music is first and foremost for a listener to enjoy any time of day or evening, and course the previously mentioned uses it can afford.

Cupid Blindfolded is an excellent group of tracks and it went by much too fast for me. When an album is really good and it catches my ear, it has a strong meaning for me personally. And that is the way it works and that’s a good thing!

Concert Review: Tailwinds Music Festival In Wappinger Falls New York

Tailwinds Music Festival In Wappinger Falls New York
June 29, 2019

FEATURING: The Chris Robinson Brotherhood
Geoff Tate's Operation: Mindcrime
Black Stone Cherry
Kings X
Sass Jordan

I often wondered what it would be like to sit in on all-day/all-night rock concert. I have been to my share of concerts over the years and saw as many as 4 bands performing short sets leading up to the headliner.  But to leave at 7 am, drive 3 hours and return home at 3 am is another matter. That is one long day. I found out that is was well worth it by the time it was all over.

The first band came on at noon, one of the three local warm-ups preceding Sass Jordan. The Jason Gisser Band was excellent and the lead singer, the namesake of the band, has one fantastic voice. He reminded me of Lenny Kravitz quite a bit actually, and as far as I am concerned that is a good thing! After that set The Playback kept things going with their energized alternative rock with a punk edge then Big Guns came on to close out the warm-up sessions. They were very good as well and the lead singer was certainly a big gun himself, I thought of the first lead singer of Marillion, the gargantuan Fish.

After the set breakdown and rebuild, Sass Jordan came on stage to kick it up a notch. The lady has been around for several years with many releases available however I never got into her music. After hearing her I am scratching my head as to why I never did. She is a great performer with just enough edge to her voice to compliment the super tight rockin’ band that supports her. After enjoying her entire set, I felt compelled to start looking into her back catalog.

Time was ticking away on this beautiful day. The threat of rain was there but the storm headed our way turned around and changed direction. The music gods were with us as the sky cleared into blue and the sun was blazing. After a few hours of that sun beating down on you, a break was necessary. And once again we were blessed with a reprieve as a cloud cover moved in and blocked out those rays. Mr. Sun would return much later in the day and provide us with a spectacular blend of colors over the mountains.

Next up was Doug Pinnick’s Kings X. His music is different and he has a distinct vocal style that takes a bit of getting used to if you are not familiar with the music. I am familiar and actually enjoy his vocal style. The music can be a very heavy prog metal to a rock-blues edge sound. One thing you can count on in the songs are some interesting time changes. All the guitar players out there would be hard-pressed to duplicate what is being produced. Pinnick’s long slender frame and extremely long arms allow him to carry his bass down to his knees. He plays it like a lead guitar. Kings X has a large catalog of music to check out and enjoy and the concert was a taste of what there is to offer the “progressive” listeners.

By this point, the audience began moving closer to the stage and it continued to grow but not to the point of pushing us out of our seats (lawn chairs). We were about 10ft back from the stage, a perfect range to capture all the sounds and vocals. I was told at the gate they sold 1,500 tickets but it sure did not look like that many people. The capacity is 5,000 so the response to this event was pretty pathetic. It supported women’s breast cancer and the artists that were on stage were fantastic, all of them.

Now for one of the main events for many that came. Geoff Tate’s Operation: Mindcrime. Many people left after he performed which was a shame because there was more great music to come. Geoff was the voice of Queensryche and without him, they should not be bearing that name it’s as simple as that. Just my opinion on the matter. In any event, Geoff sounds fantastic and his command of the stage keeps your eyes glued right on him. He is not only singing he is playing the part of the main character in the story. The tour he and his excellent band are on this year is to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of that classic progressive metal album Operation: Mindcrime.

At one point during the performance, this beautiful blonde girl comes out on stage to sing with Geoff. I had no idea who she was. It was Geoff’s daughter Emily. She also was holding down the fort at the band’s merch table. Later on, I stopped by to say hello and asked her to make sure she told her dad that I thought that was the best Queensryche show I have ever seen. That was number 3 for me. I thought that would put a smile on his face.

Tate is as energetic and vibrant as ever and the band is tight and spot on. Basically, everything necessary to perform such a classic and musically difficult to perform recording. With twin guitars blazing away and a rhythm section that you can feel pounding right through your chest, it’s just what the doctor ordered for Mr. Tate to be in his best form. I took more pictures of that performance than any of the entire day and evening. In fact, I know CRB was the headliner but Geoff’s band could have easily been as well. No disrespect to CRB, they are fantastic, but as far as the level of musicianship and precision delivery, they are equals without question.

After that incredible performance, what more could a music lover ask for right? Well, how about the totally kick-ass Black Stone Cherry? Now here is a band that I knew of and I never pursued their music. After hearing their performance, I am totally hooked. They put on an amazing show and it rocked the house down. I went to the local vinyl LP vendor there and grabbed the only copy of their latest release Family Tree. I spoke to one of their fans on the way to the lovely porta-potties and he informed me that was their best album and they had just played 5 songs for us. I was sold!  Anyone that likes to rock would love this band I have no doubt. For those music fans that left early, which was foolish, you missed a band in its prime cranking it out.

Now after hearing all of that loud and raucous music, I think we were all ready for something different, some tunes with a warmer blues, funky rock sound. That would be provided by The Chris Robinson Brotherhood. I picked up their new release Servants of the Sun in limited edition colored vinyl. I have yet to give it a spin but I am sure it’s great. I will buy anything they put it without a second thought.

CRB has a distinct sound and their main man Chris has a vocal style that is instantly recognizable. There is not anyone that sounds like him. I saw them several years ago when they had their first album out and completely enjoyed the show. This evening would be no exception. They made their way through thirteen songs interweaving their own blend of southern rock, blues, and country. I always enjoyed the guitar playing which reminds me fondly of the Allman Brothers. Chris looked very happy on stage, smiling frequently. There is not a lot to say from this group, Chris thanks the audience after each song then launches right into another one. They are like a well-oiled machine on stage and in the studio. They will be winding up their tour and finally taking a well-deserved break.

What day, what a night. I will never forget the experience I had hearing all that music. It was a glorious day and I hope if they have this event again and more importantly, that the support will be much better.

World Review: Riad Abdel-Gawad-Words of Peace

Release Date: June 21, 2019
Label: Medan Elmusica

Riad Abdel-Gawad is the founder and Executive Director of Midan Elmusica (The Music Square), which exhibits to and informs the US public about what is called: “Arabic Music” from Egypt. (information gleaned from the artist website). There is much more to the story of course.

The importance of Words of Peace goes far beyond the music itself. The Midan Elmusica, Inc. Promotions is a not for profit organization that is promoting this CD release of the artist. So, playing the music, buying the CD or streaming it on ZMR, for instance, all goes into supporting the project.

The recording utilizes 17 singers, chanters and instrumentalists in a music ensemble from Cairo, Egypt. All the music was Composed by Riad Abdel-Gawad.  This is music that is very important on many levels however to the uninformed listener it could have an entirely different meaning. I could not give it a spin without finding out more about the artist that created and why. That made a big difference in my entire perception of what I was hearing.

Words of Peace utilizes 17 singers, chanters and instrumentalists in a music ensemble from Cairo, Egypt. Composed by Riad Abdel-Gawad, Words of Peace cross-pollinates the western oratorio with the eastern wasla and nouba musical traditions into a newly composed 21st-Century work in the World music genre.
Through music, song and chant, Words of Peace offers healing, spiritual and practical tools to our present-day existential dilemma along with offering a social critique of racism, corruption, materialism, and the Climate Crisis. To the story of Adam & Eve, to the history of Egypt and to the narrative of Prophet Muhammed’s striving towards peace through the activism of politics, the result – of the 18-track 53-minute album – is a secular and sacred parable about the plight of our planet and its inhabitants through Arabic and Nubian (African) poetry.
I think all the individuals that contributed deserve a lot of credit for lending their expertise to the music. The vocals are very melodic and so is the music.  I did really enjoy the music; it does get your toes tapping.

Regardless of the lack of knowledge of the language in the vocals, it did not take away the meaning or overall significance of what I was taking in.

Words of Peace is exposing world music that many have never had the opportunity to hear, including me. It is reaching out to be heard and I am certain it will be. This is music that can be appreciated in many different ways and I think there is an audience that would be eager to hear this project and learn more about the story behind it.
