Bassist John Ferrara of Prog Ensemble Consider The Source Announces June 13th Album Release, Summer Tour of New Duo Project

John Ferrara, bassist for globetrotting psych-fusion stalwarts Consider the Source, brings his powerful solo compositions to life with the aid of virtuoso percussionist Seth Moutal in their debut album “Frail Things in Sharp Places” to be released on June 13, 2018.

“We wanted our debut to be an honest representation of ourselves,” John says. “While there’s a lot of shredding, Indian rhythms, looping and tapping, each song has immense emotional significance. We took our time to make sure nothing was gratuitous. This album is who we are. I play a 5-string bass and loop chords and melodies while playing basslines on my homemade Taurus pedals. Seth plays drum set, tablas, and a variety of hand percussion instruments. We play everything you hear on the album, and we try not to record it if we can’t do it live.” Moutal's plethora of percussive timbres blends with Ferrara's trademark cascading loops and growling hand-built synths to create an immersive tapestry of sound and groove.

In support of their debut album, The John Ferrara & Seth Moutal Duo will bring their visionary blend of progressive rock, jazz, minimalism and world music to select shows in the northeast. Take a listen to some tracks from “Frail Thing in Sharp Places” for a taste of the album's vibrant world of hypnotic percussion and soaring melody.

German Music Legends Guru Guru Celebrate 50 Years With New CD "Rotate!"

50 years of Guru Guru - that's 50 years of Krautrock!

Dudenhofen, Germany - If you hadn't believed possible that Mani Neumeier and his Guru Guru still rank among Germany's most active and prolific rock bands, well, then you'd be proven wrong!

Founded in 1968, the year of the student's revolt in Germany, Guru Guru has reached their 50th anniversary and still maintains their innovative spirit. Where many a musician made it big as a one-hit-wonder just to fade into oblivion soon after, Guru Guru carved their way outside the mainstream and short lived trends by blending experimental rock, avant-garde, jazz and world music into an unique, original form of rock 'n' roll.

No one will deny that there were ups and downs, but nowadays, Mani (Drums/Percussion/Vocals) shares the stage with two long-standing companions. Roland Schaeffler (Guitar/Saxophone/Vocals) and Peter Kuhmstedt (Bass/Vocals) have been with Guru Guru for more than 40 years. The passing of Hans Reffert, aged 69 (Feb. 21, 2016), was a severe blow, but with newly recruited guitar player Jan Lindqvist they overcame this tragedy and proved that they are not in the least tired of creating music. Those four “Krautrockers” are living legends and next to the Rolling Stones among the longest-serving rock bands on this planet. Mani and Mick are in fact standing next to each other in the Tokyo House of Wax! Mani Neumeier and his Gurus are the epitome of a band that defies musical trends and fads and transcends limitations and genres even on their newest CD called “Rotate!”

After more than 40 releases (LP, CD & DVD), Guru Guru demonstrates that the “overhauled Flagship of German rock” - as they have been called by the German magazine Musikexpress - have not lost their ability to entrance and provide an extraordinary spectacle. Songs like “Ooga Booga Special” span the decades, from the early days of “Magic Tree” to their latest studio album “Rotate!” which has been released to celebrate the band's 50th anniversary in 2018. Never to be missed of course is the immortal “Elektroluch”: The underground hit that has written “Krautrock” history and is, to this day, an intregal part in the band's live performance.

Whoever thought that Guru Guru would slow down or that Mani would retire to a quiet life in the countryside couldn't be more wrong. After 50 years they continue to go their own way because they've always been - and still are unique!

Metal Review: A Sound of Thunder - It Was Metal (Special Ed. 180 gm 2 LP Set Black/Orange Splatter)

Release Date: June 15, 2018
Label: Independent
Website

I like having a history with an artist or band. This is the kind of relationship I have with A Sound of Thunder. I have always done my level best to cover their music and I go all the way back to the 2012 release Out of the Darkness. And here we are in 2018 and they are set to release another metal masterpiece.

The band is Nina Osegueda (vocals, theremin), Josh Schwartz (guitars, keyboards), Jesse Keen (bass, keyboards) and Chris Haren   (drums, percussion).

The new album is titled It Was Metal. What is different this time is I have the 2 LP set in a limited run of black with an orange splatter in nice a tri-fold package. And yes, it looks very cool. And of course, the sound on vinyl is superb. And if you happen to a fan of comic books there is one that tells the story that is set to music. The comic book series by Bob Hall is what inspired this musical tribute.

It Was Metal is a story or concept if you. Call it what you like, it comes together with their own comic book and some incredibly good music. The music is Metal and much more. You will hear some prog, blues and few other unexpected things blaring through your speakers.

The opening track is “Phantom Flight (featuring Mark Tornillo)” and sets the tone for what there is ahead (more killer tracks). Then the curtain closer “Fortress of the Future Race,” is absolutely perfect. Keep in mind this is a story and that last track, which is one of the very best on the album, leaves the door open for a continuing saga…

This band pledges allegiance to no one and does not fit nicely into any box. Metal is a common thread that runs through their music however it ends up being a patchwork quilt with a lot thrown into the mix to make a very full and interesting listen. And who said you could not take Metal and bend and shape it into something more? A Sound of Thunder creates their own sound with a foundation of crunching guitars and a pounding rhythm section. The title certainly makes a statement however it means more than just a reference to the music because of the storyline, comic book, and artwork.

The one striking about this LP set is the artwork. The cover reminded of classic Dio and Judas Priest albums with all the demons rising from hell to destroy the earth. So, sharpen your blades and raise them up high to fight all you metal fans! It is all so much fun to put this whole thing together, hold it in your hand, and check out all the great pictures on the gatefold sleeves. It sure as hell beats a digital download but those are nice to have on your phone or iPod, I must admit.

It Was Metal is complete musical experience as it was meant to be. You get a beautiful 180-gram splatter vinyl set, and then you can watch it spin around on your turntable. There is something mesmerizing about that, especially with colored vinyl of any kind.  As the music comes blaring out your speakers and fills the room you are in, you realize how much you have missed this kind of experience in the digital age.

So, what’s there not to like about this package? It is everything a true music fan could possibly ask for. And believe me, this band kicks some major ass and they play it all loud and proud just like any fan would expect. So, get this vinyl while you can and experience it all and feel the power of A Sound of Thunder. I think It Was Metal will inspire you to seek out more of this band’s catalog not to mention the classic metal albums you may not have heard in a while.

Instrumental Ambient Review: Jon Durant-Parting Is

Release Date: January 18, 2018
Label: Alchemy Records

When I heard the name Jon Durant it made me think, I know that name. I also felt like I had heard a similar sound somewhere. That is quite likely however as it turns out when I had the muzikreviews.com site running, one of my staff covered the Colin Edwin and Jon Durant release Burnt Belief. That was in December 2012.

What I really can appreciate in the music industry is artists helping artists. That is exactly what Jon does on his own Alchemy Records. Who understands a musician more than one of their own? Today this is commonplace and it should have happened eons ago. With that being said, Jon knows how to create some of his own significant pieces of music as well.

Parting Is (such sweet sorrow?) the latest release by Jon. It came out in the middle of January 2018. He uses no synths on this recording (you could have fooled me), which I found quite astounding.

Jon uses a broad selection of PRS (Paul Reed Smith) guitars which includes an electric 12 string, cloud guitar, Koll Tornado fretless guitar, Klein electric guitar, and the Spector Fretless bass. With this amazing array of electrified guitars, the talented Mr. Durant takes guitar-based music to another place. It is like taking a journey into unchartered waters or space beyond our own galaxy. As this artist explores these new soundscapes you will find yourself wondering how this was all this was accomplished on Parting Is. I believe the cloud guitars are the instruments that create the synth sounds, that just makes sense to me.

When you look at the cover art of this recording you wonder what Jon is trying to convey. I think most artists are sending a message with the cover art although some just like using certain colors or a fancy image they saw. As simplistic as this image seems it does tell a story, a developing story. I see peacefulness that has an impending change, the calm before the storm? Parting Is what? Perhaps parting from the serene colors that the picture shows and the grey (area?) clouds signaling that the rain is coming or a violent storm. But there is light shining through the darkness which gives you hope. Is this a reflection of life itself? We can see things are looking terribly dreary then suddenly a light comes shining through to cast out the darkness and bring things back into focus. This my own personal musical hypothesis, surely everyone would have their own.

I really enjoy the process that an artist can present with art and music. The music on this nine-track CD is beautiful, elegant, haunting, and most importantly, full of musical emotion and colorful imagery. This music lives and breathes and tells the story, but the best part is it can be your story, just look a little further, inside the music…

New Age-Classical Review: Christine Brown-Ascend

Release Date: October 1, 2017
Label: Key Image Music
It has been 4 years since I had the opportunity to enjoy writing about a Christine Brown recording. I covered Souvenirs in 2014. Looking back into the archives I see that I was ill at the time of my first listening experience and her music helped me get in a positive frame of mind and get well again.

Ascend was released in October of 2017, which now seems ions away with the warm weather upon us in May. As people find ascension in life it can come in many different forms, and it also can be disguised as something else that is happening. Even the definition of the word can take different forms such as to move upward, to slope upward, or to conduct nerve impulses toward or to the brain.

I think in this case those definitions can apply to all fourteen tracks offered on the recording. The beauty and simplicity of solo piano music is something special. I look at it as an uplifting and pure representation of an instrument. The ivory keys in the right hands can bring heaven to earth and peace to one’s soul. I realize that is a prolific statement to make about music however that is the way I truly feel.

Ascend had a positive effect on me. The nerve impulses to my brain engaged my thought process and released all of those good endorphins.  I liked the way Christine explained the process of making the album. She stated in one passage in a sentence in the liner notes “Creating music is a beautiful and evolving process. Each piece develops through many stages, slowly transforming until each song is ready to be released, just like the life cycle of a butterfly, until it finally emerges from the chrysalis.”

That is a brilliant comparison to one of the miracles of nature. This is an accurate statement to make, in my opinion, about the birth of a track from start to finish. I have always looked at the creation of each track as a bit of a miracle, and those that are able to create on such a level are the blessed that walk this great planet of ours.

If you want to Ascend from daily life, relax, absorb, reflect and heal, music can get you there, just let it take you. Christine Brown will gently push you there if you cannot just fall into it and be swept away like some fortunate listeners. This is a journey and one that can be therapeutic in several ways. Ascending from self, sidestepping the ego of our humanity, and letting the music take over is the best choice you can make. Look what happened when Christine let the music flow through her fingers…

Japanese Prog Ensemble Yuka & Chronoship Announce the Release of Their New Album SHIP

Instrumental Rock-Blues-Country Review: Eric Tingstad-Electric Spirit

Release Date: May 18, 2018
Label: Independent

If you are an instrumental music fan, I have just the right thing for you to check out. Eric Tingstad will be releasing Electric Spirit on May 18th, 2018.

I have become accustomed to the acoustic recordings of Eric and have always enjoyed them. The arrival of an all-electric album came as a surprise. I know the man is a very talented purveyor of the six-string so I looked forward to hearing this offering called Electric Spirit.

With his deep commitment to the music and his surroundings that mother earth provides, Eric derives great inspiration. His playing is heartfelt and meaningful to those who believe in cherishing and protecting our environment. After all, what do we have without our precious earth were humans and all living things can thrive? I am with him in his beliefs and the importance of sending the message continually. This what he does as an artisan and advocate of the environment.

Electric Spirit is only different in musical approach, not subject matter. I think I was more than ready to hear Eric play some electric guitar. His tone is as sweet as honey and his picking as sharp as a razor blade ready for its first shave. Picture that analogy and then listen to the music, you will understand.

What you will hear on Electric Spirit is an eclectic mixture of genres all fusing together to make for a multicultural musical experience. There are blues, country, and rock or more appropriately for some ears, Americana. Whatever you want to call it, it’s all of those performed with a touch of glass and high-end production that any guitar aficionado could produce.

This music runs deep like “Big River,” “Oh’ Shenandoah” and “The Train of Thought” (interesting play on words). The tracks he composed and performed are just sparkling with spirit and good energy. I really appreciated the way Eric took all of his influences and some classic tunes and made them his own, like “Amazing Grace” and “Over The Rainbow.”

Those graceful and well-placed guitars lined just set me at ease and all my worry and stress just melted away. It was like the sweet surrender of my soul to the music and the reward was a deep satisfaction and abiding respect for the artist and his music. It was like every note rang true and resonated with me. That is my personal journey and everyone will have their own story to tell, once they hear this great music.

Eric Tingstad is a great musician and I love the fact that he decided to stretch out and give his listeners another side of his artistry to enjoy on Electric Spirit.

Instrumental Prog Artist The Man From RavCon To Release Ninth Album "Another World"

New Age Review: Kevin Wood-Eternal

Release Date: May 4, 2018
Label: Real Music
Website

Eternal is Kevin Wood’s fourth studio album. He is the penultimate indie artist, helping many other artists that make spiritually enlightened music with his company New Vision Music.

Kevin has been recording for quite some time now. We do have something in common, we both lost our beloved Mothers at a young age. Similar to how Kevin has dealt with that loss, I used the passing of my Mother as inspiration to carry on and always believed she was my guardian angel. Sooner or later like-minded people connect and realize they have the same goals and purpose and this case it feels that way after finding out more about the artist.

Eternal is an amazing tapestry of sound, vision, and voice. Typically, the new age music I have the opportunity to hear and share my viewpoint on is all instrumental. Little by little I am being introduced to more albums with vocals and finding enjoyment. This was a different journey for me. I heard some gorgeous vocals on this recording and did not understand a word, nor did I have any idea what language was being used. I do know one thing, it felt right, it moved me, and most importantly I sincerely appreciated it. The universal language of sound remains a true wonder to me every time I hear something new.

The music and vocals seemed like they were meant for each other. I am sure once this album circulates amongst other artists, therapists, yoga teachers and the like, the news will travel fast that listening to it will provide many benefits to an open-minded audience. To be more specific, I mean listening with an open heart, mind, and spirit. This is the kind of experience that is three-fold, the triangle of life, that which encapsulates our existence as sentient beings on this planet.

Eternal has the power to take you to another plane that will help you heal and rejuvenate your soul. For my ears and spirituality, it stimulated me and made me realize I really do not have to understand what the words mean. What it was meant for is a relaxing way to look inward and realize the importance of reflecting on your day. This music carries the hope that you will generally be feeling better about yourself and your surroundings. Music such as this puts things into proper perspective and helps you to realize even more how we are all connected regardless of where we are from, what language we speak or what religion we may practice. We all want the same thing, peace, love, harmony, and basic needs. Music with power and a bright shining spiritual light tends to bring about a clear and pure thought process. It always does for me.

I hope everyone can listen to Eternal and garner something from it like I did. I stepped away from the listening experience with gratitude and thanks to Kevin Wood for creating a real piece of art and music on a single shiny disc that just happened to make my day.

Country-Blues Review: Willie Nelson -Last Man Standing

Release Date: April 27, 2018
Label: Legacy

Willie Nelson is a National Treasure. He just keeps keepin’ on like very few recording artists do. In fact, many of them never live as long as Willie. 85 years young and he is still going strong.

Willie’s music has really grown on me over the years and most recently really caught my ear. The latest release is a country blues fest called Last Man Standing.

His tongue in cheek and matter of fact lyrics will put a smile on your face and warm your soul. The music is superb, it’s as simple as that. I love the combination of blues and country and always have. To make an outstanding record you need polished and experienced professionals like Willie. That would also include anyone he decides to bring into his camp to record his next album. That is exactly what you can expect from Last Man Standing.

I think the amazing thing about Willie is his resiliency throughout the years and the ability to make meaningful music. Some of the tracks are quite funny, like “Bad Breath.” Willie sings “It’s better to have bad breath than none at all.” That very point-blank frankness of the lyric tickled my funny bone.

Then there are tracks on the more serious heartfelt side like “Something You Get Through.” He sure can sing a ballad. As far as I can tell the man has not lost a step in his ability to play the guitar, compose a song and deliver it in his own unique way.

Willie’s pensive “Last Man Standing” is a matter of fact and true to life story regarding the unavoidable finality of our time here on this planet. At first, he says he doesn’t want to be the last man standing then states, “Wait a minute, maybe a do!” He has lost some lifetime buddies like Waylon and Johnny etc. (Check out The Highway Men). Even though losing a good friend is a serious matter the man still can find the humor in what life brings us. That is an essential tool he uses frequently in his lyrics.

Listen to Willie sing “Heaven Is Closed” and hell is overcrowded so I think I will just stay where I am. Again, this points to the fact that perhaps this is the reality of the world we now live in. Then the bluesy country fried “She Made My Day” is a great tune about a relationship between a man and woman. This one line says it all… “She made my day but it ruined my life.”

Last Man Standing is Willie Nelson at his very best. This will be one the hottest selling country albums in 2018, I have no doubt.

Curved Air Founding Member & Legendary Violinist Darryl Way to Release First Ever Rock Version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Out Now!

Almost 50 years after the creation of his classic rock anthem Vivaldi, Curved Air's trail blazing violinist Darryl Way, has arranged and recorded the whole of Vivaldi's masterpiece The Four Seasons and given it the same 'rock' treatment.

Way said of the project: “You cannot improve upon perfection, which the Four Seasons undoubtedly is, but I felt that the Four Seasons, a piece that has been a seminal influence in my life, would be fertile ground for a reinterpretation. Having said that, I have not changed any of the notes, except in some of the slow movements, where it is generally accepted that the written notes can be embellished. I have just added to the mix, rock instrumentation and rhythms, synth textures and in the slow movements, some chill out beats.”

The album is entitled Vivaldi's Four Seasons in Rock and is released on the 4th of May 2018 via Cherry Red Records.

“I already had a good idea that a rock arrangement could work with Vivaldi's music, from my work on the Curved Air track 'Vivaldi'. The challenge was, to maintain Vivaldi's original concept of the piece and tell the same story. Whether I have risen to that challenge is not for me to say, but if you were a fan of my Curved Air track 'Vivaldi', there's a good chance you're going to like this as well.”

Jazz Fusion-Rock-Pop-Funk Review: Project Grand Slam-Trippin’

Release Date: June 29, 2018
Label: Cakewalk Records

This will be my sixth voyage into the world of Project Grand Slam (PGS). So, what is this experience going to be like this time? I would expect the same great combination of jazz, rock, funk, and pop that I always enjoyed.

Just so you all know PGS is: Robert Miller (bass), Mario Castro (saxophones), Bayden Goyo (keyboards), Joel E. Mateo (drums), Guillermo Barron Rios (percussion), Tristan Clark (guitar) and the beautiful Ms. Ziarra Washington (vocals).

So, now we are Trippin’ into 2018 with PGS. And the first track titled “1972” was like turning on the radio and hearing the Average White Band or Tower of Power. Yes sir, on the AM dial, it came blaring through back in those days.

The title track is a real gas too. This number has some great sax from Castro and a killer rhythm section courtesy of Miller and Mateo. It shines the spotlight on them clear and bright. Let me tell you, those two are like the dynamic duo, kind of like a pitcher and catcher in total sync for nine innings (if you are a fan of baseball you can follow, if not…). I could listen to instrumental jazz like that for an entire album, I just love it. I always have had great respect for recording artists but when you are working on some jazz fusion and rock it takes everything to an entirely different level.

I was already buckled in and ready for another ride after that burner and then “Country Drive” kicked in and kept that instrumental excellence coming. The Sanborn like sax and those red-hot guitars just kept the blood pumping, it was like the quiet storm meets the rockers.

You will hear some of the funkiest jams and well-crafted sing-along tracks as well on this recording.  Ziarra belts out l “You Started Something,” and real toe-tapper called “March of the Diplomats,” is little lower key with minimal vocals but very effective.

Now, of course, they have to do at least one cover, right? Just to show us how they can funk it all up and make it their own. They pull it off with The Who’s “I Can’t Explain.”

Trippin’ has musicianship beyond reproach and a universal sound and warmth that is hard to resist. You will get your groove thang on listening to this music, and if you don’t have a groove thang, you will have one by the time you are done listening to this music!

Remember music fans, spice is the variety of life itself and this band is so spicy you may need a drink or two to temper those taste buds…

5/5 Stars
