New Age/World Review: Micki Free-The Native American Flute as Therapy

Release Date: October 28, 2016
Label: Mysterium Music
Music created by those who have mastered the Native American Flute are in command of something very special. The Native American Flute as Therapy by Micki Free is clear about what you are getting right from the start. This is a guided meditation by the artist Micki Free with the sounds of the flute, running streams, and a guide to another state of consciousness, including a short explanation of each track telling exactly what certain elements can accomplish.

For instance, the track “Lavender Kiss,” goes through a short dissertation on the uses of Lavender and what it can treat, depression and anxiousness to mention a few. I found the entire presentation as one of the most original and different I have had the pleasure to enjoy and experience. “Lavender Kiss” is not a typical track however; the flute is consistently soothing and leading the way, while the other instrumentation is an acoustic guitar and organ. It is like modern rock interspersed with the flute. Two worlds intersect nicely to allow a crossover audience to consider listening.  I personally appreciated the track quite a bit. The title track serves as one of the keys to unlocking the gifts in this music as well.

Based on my past experiences listening to any new age or world music, I would have to say that this unique. That is not a word I use lightly or very often when discussing music that I listen to. I thought the sound of running water was a bonus to the sounds of the flute. That is one sound that always soothes us. It is from where we came and eventually return. Your spirit will connect with this music quite quickly if you allow it to happen. For me, it was a natural transition.

I listen to a lot of music every year in the new age and world genre and The Native American Flute as Therapy by Micki Free will be an experience you will not forget and certainly will have a reason to revisit.

The package comes with 2 CDs, a video DVD, an extensive behind-the-scenes booklet, and a generous helping of music and meditations.

Pre-YES Music Legends Mabel Greer's Toyshop To Release New Single From Forthcoming Album!

New single “Big Brother, Little Brother” to be released December 1, 2016!

London, UK - Pre-YES music legends Mabel Greer's Toyshop has found a novel way of releasing new musical works. The band will release one track per month for eight months starting today. The songs will be initially available as downloads and buying all eight songs will qualify for a free CD and booklet at the end.

Since founding members Clive Bayley and Bob Hagger reunited, the band have written and produced this second album inside 2 years. The first offering “New Way Of Life” was co-produced by the bass player of YES, Billy Sherwood, who also featured on the album playing bass and keyboards. Tony Kaye, original organist for Mabel Greer and for YES, also played on “New Way Of Life”.

“No need to wait another year for fresh new Mabel Greer sounds, we would like our audience to slowly savor the songs one at a time, rather than trying to digest the whole album in one sitting”, said composer, singer and guitarist, Clive Bayley. “This new offering called 'The Secret' is comprised of all exciting new material, the prior album included songs written in the sixties”, added Bob Hagger.

Hugo Barré, on bass guitar, accompanies Bayley and Hagger along with a new addition to the band, Max Hunt on multiple keyboards who also co-produced this new album. What is The Secret? - Well apparently we will have to wait until the all tracks are released before finding out – an intriguing story…

The first song “Big Brother, Little Brother”, an almost 9 minute epic, laments the ongoing plight of Native American Indians. The track will be available from December 1, 2016 from https://mabelgreerstoyshop.bandcamp.com, Amazon, iTunes and all major distribution platforms.

Holiday Vinyl LP Review: Elvis Presley-Merry Christmas Baby - RSD Exclusive

Genre:  Holiday/Blues
Release Date: November 25, 2016
Label: RCA/Legacy

With the Holidays upon us once again we have an opportunity to hear some new music and old standards. And some artists should never give it a thought to release an album of Christmas songs. It reminds me of the year the Metal God Rob Halford released one just because he always wanted to. The results were horrific, it probably should have been released as a Halloween joke to all metal heads. At this point I regress...

Well there are artists, or legends I should say, that have some great recordings that they have released over their long and productive careers, and in this case, we are talking about the iconic Elvis Presley.

RCA/Legacy dug into the archives to release a special Record Store Day limited edition of Merry Christmas Baby in random red and green vinyl. Mine came in green and it is beautiful vinyl with fantastic music and select tracks from the king.

Vinyl is growing exponentially, and along with that, record players have come into vogue once again. Also, stores like Newbury Comics who used to carry thousands of CDs, has pulled them out of their stores and replaced them with vinyl and other swag and memorabilia. I was shocked to see this happen but it makes sense on a business level - you must stock what sells. If I want a CD I get it on eBay, it’s as simple as that.

So, the state of music today has many variables however availability for special issue vinyl LPs and the demand for them has soared. I am thankful for that. What I have found interesting is that all along I thought the sound of CDs was as good as it would ever get, I was wrong. I hear things on vinyl now I never would have noticed before on a CD.

You get 17 tracks, which is a handful for a standard LP and each one stands on its own as Elvis at his best. The best thing about this release besides the color and format is the fact that the king covers some holiday classics infused with some heavy blues influence. It’s not the sugar and spice and everything nice kiddy stuff that you hear blaring at Wal Mart this time of year, oh no.  This is flat out rockin’ blues based music adapted to Christmas classics. At one point Elvis hollers out “Play it Scotty,” calling out his guitar man Scotty Moore to cut loose.

I don’t think music fans or Elvis fans could ask for more this Holiday season. You get the King getting down and dirty with a crackerjack band and his voice is full of emotion and grit. I enjoyed this LP immensely and plan to make it a yearly spin this time of year from this day forward.

San Francisco - Karney is a San Francisco-based singer/songwriter that has been making great music for many years, performing across the US and collaborating with many talented and notable artists. Keeping her mind on social justice and positive messages, her lyrical content offers a sardonic and sometimes straight forward approach to many of the issues facing people today, with a message of hope resonating throughout every song she writes. Karney is digitally releasing a handful of new songs between August and the end of 2016 in support of her upcoming full-length album Renditions, due out in early 2017.

While Karney’s eclectic songwriting is based in solid musicianship, her new material echoes a diverse set of musical influences. She will release a series of digital EP’s, featuring a few different renditions of her new songs on each, through her own independent record label, Karney Music & Sound. The second in the series, Singles Vol. 2: Restless Wind w/ Same Song, was released on November 18th, 2016. Also joining Karney on these new recordings are members of her live band, including long time musicians Jeff Herrera (Drums), Kimon Manolius (Bass and Vocals) and Mike Doyle (Guitar), while Karney holds down Guitar and Lead Vocals and Keyboards on all songs.

Additionally, Karney is very excited to be working with New York based visual artist Susan Kaprov, who will bring a dynamic visual interpretation to her songs with assorted artwork. New Age Instrumental Review: Karen Olson- A Hero’s Journey

Release Date: August 28, 2016
Label: Innerview Records

Karen Olson has released a new album titled A Hero’s Journey. Most recently I featured a select track on my Rate The Tracks site. “Inner Wanderings” was the stream provided. And that served as a taste of what was available on the full recording. The track suggests the human condition and what we find when we look inside for the truth.

The main instrument is the viola throughout this extraordinary recording. Admittedly, featuring a stringed instrument as the lead would be and is most difficult. Ms. Olson accomplishes this with a distinctness and quality that is exemplary. High praise goes to her collaborator Crispin Barrymore as well for helping to make this project what it evolved into.

I particularly enjoyed the use of the layers of keyboards to accentuate and put an exclamation point on her musicianship.

My three favorite tracks came in succession “Life Force,” “Inner Wanderings,” and Heaven’s Gate.” They seemed intrinsically linked to each other and the titles certainly got my attention. This music serves the listener well as it is meant to. It is soothing, contemplative with a hint of sadness and then there is hope and a shining bright light at the end of the musical tunnel. Karen Olson has a multitude of talents that she brings to bear. It is all on display on 11 tracks that are presented here.

This can be your journey or A Hero’s Journey. Whatever the music can provide you at any time day or night, it has the power to do so. With such clarity and command Karen Olson brings her music to you with grace and the knowledge of an enlightened spirit willing to share her own glimpse of heaven.

Curved Air Rarities Series Vol. 2 "Curved Space & Infinity" Now Available!

London, UK - “Curved Space & Infinity”, the second volume of the CURVED AIR RARITIES SERIES, is now available! These TWO separate albums, packaged together are a must for fans of the legendary Prog band and instrumental improvisational music!

This instrumental double CD set is the only Curved Air release not to feature lead singer Sonja Kristina, but has been released with her full support and blessing.

The line-up on “Curved Space”, which was previously released as Francis Monkman's “Jam” but now features two previously unreleased bonus tracks, includes Francis Monkman (guitar), Florian Pilkington-Miksa (drums) and Rob Martin (bass).

Francis Monkman commented “I'm pleased that the ‘Jam CD’ has been transmuted into a Curved Space release. An entirely collaborative effort, I was never keen for it to be released in the guise of a solo album, but there seemed to be no viable alternative at the time. Listening to it now, it seems to me to sound as fresh as ever - indeed it was an ideal for some bands in the 1960's to come as close as possible to jamming all the time, precisely because the process of raw discovery holds elements that simply cannot be reproduced when material has been subjected to rehearsal (usually after dissection into some kind of song format).”

The line-up on “Infinity”, which are all NEW 2016 STUDIO RECORDINGS includes Florian Pilkington-Miksa (drums), Kirby Gregory (guitar) and Robert Norton (keys).

Robert Norton said of Infinity “At times we found it hard to believe these compositions were created entirely in the moment and were genuinely surprised and inspired by what emerged from them. The name Infinity encapsulates the spirit of freedom with which the three of us approached the making of this album and the limitless possibilities of creating music in the moment.”

Track listing:
DISC ONE: CURVED SPACE
1. TOWARDS TOMORROW
2. SEA OF TRANQUILLITY
3. BAGHDAD CAFÉ / RETURN TO CALVARY / TOWARDS INFINITY
4. SOL Y SOMBRA
5. HARP RIFF
6. FREE TIBET
7. BLUE YONDER BLUES
8. PLAYIN’ AWAY
9. ROSE

DISC TWO: INFINITY

Concert Review: Almost Queen

Almost Queen Rocks The Colonial Theater

November 19, 2016

Pittsfield, Massachusetts

Tribute bands have become commonplace in the world of music. Some are fantastic representations of the original bands and others get by somehow. Last night at the Colonial Theater was an example of a group of musicians honing their skills and presentation to make you believe it was Queen performing. They are not just a cover band as the DJ from Live 95.9 told the crowd, they bring you the Queen Experience!

Almost Queen certainly sounded more than almost. This was a truly amazing performance by these talented individuals. The lineup is as follows: Joseph Russo as Freddie Mercury, Steve Leonard as Brian May, Randy Gregg as John Deacon and John Cappadona as Roger Taylor. It is uncanny how Russo is a dead ringer for Freddie and sounds just like him. What are the chances of that happening? Well believe it, this is the stuff that fairy tales and dreams are made of. Russo was a good study of Mr. Mercury down to his mannerisms and moves on the stage, not to mention his refined accent and humorous comments.

I saw Queen in 1976-77 and ironically Russo told the audience the same thing. So, for this music fan the bar was set as high as it could possibly be. They not only met that expectation, they exceeded it. The musicianship was excellent and the lead vocals and harmonies were spot on. I could not have asked for more as far as representing the legend of this great band properly. They did it all with a class and flare that Freddie would have loved. In my opinion Freddie Mercury (lead singer 1970-1991) was the greatest rock singer to ever grace a stage. It is unfortunate we lost him at such a young age.

The crowd was at capacity and it was one of the most energetic and joyful groups of people I have had the pleasure to be amongst. I am sure the band was thrilled with the response they got all night long. And what was most satisfying was that everyone knew the words to the songs we were asked to participate in. It was magical and it made my heart smile.

The concert once again validated the legacy and the importance of Queen since their inception in 1970, which by the way was an incredibly exciting decade for music. Some of the highlights of the evening where “Tie Your Mother Down,” the second song into the set. That is real rocker and set the tone and energy level for the night. As they made their way through their set, they covered many of the hits and familiar tunes. If you were a Queen fan you were there last night. I think most of audience that either remembers the band and the younger generation that discovered them were present. It was an exhilarating experience to be a part of.

The encore? You guessed it, the incredible progressive work of art titled “Bohemian Rhapsody” their signature song. It was the pinnacle of the evening no doubt.

For those interested in the Queen catalog, the releases that are high on my list are Queen 1 & 2, Sheer Heart Attack, Night At The Opera and Day At The Races (which were two classic Marx Brothers comedies). I also highly recommend purchasing the complete box sets of Queen and most of all, attending a live performance of Almost Queen.

I attend as many concerts as humanly possible at the beautiful venue and always feel grateful and honored to do so. A big shout out thanks to Rebecca Rebecca Brighenti of Public Relations and the in-house sound wizard at the board Darren O’Brien who always does a superb job.

Swedish Keyboard Legend Pär Lindh Launches New Ensemble "TRITON" The NICE Legacy of ELP & PLP

Sweden – Swedish keyboard legend Pär Lindh is launching his new band “TRITON”: The NICE Legacy of ELP & PLP. The new ensemble was created to honor the legacy of The Nice, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and the Pär Lindh Project.

Says Pär, “My band Pär Lindh Project or PLP in short was struck by the passing of our beloved singer Magdalena Hagberg in 2007. She died from cancer and this was a terrible blow to the band from which PLP could never really recover.

“Thus we have a situation today of three great keyboard driven bands that are no more. The Nice, ELP and PLP. In 1995 I played with Lee Jackson and Brian Davidson and we were going to form The New Nice but due to lack of financial backing it didn't happen.

“To keep the legacy of these three unique bands alive I have decided to begin touring under the name TRITON and the concept The Nice Legacy of PLP & ELP. The idea is that because all three above bands no longer exist we want to keep their legacy going as there is just an tremendous amount of extraordinary musical material to perform in concert. The musical legacy of three great bands all in one show!”

Along with Pär on keyboards and synthesizers, the band features Göran Holmberg on Bass, and Putte Saavedra on drums. Saavedra was along with Pär in starting the progressive wave in 1991 organizing the perhaps first ever progressive rock festival in Sweden. Incidentally, all  members of TRITON performed at this festival, which was then followed by Progfest 93 in Los Angeles USA where Pär also performed and the rest is history as they say.

Göran Holmberg and Putte Saavedra comes from the band MANTICORE which performed the music of YES, Genesis and when Pär was a short time member 1989-1991 even ELP covers. MANTICORE has also released an album with their own music called “Time to Fly” in the mid nineties.

Watch Triton performing “Hoedown”:

For those in the progressive rock community Pär Lindh is considered a keyboard wizard – so much so that he was chosen to play keys for the reunion of the legendary Nice (a prestigious position only held by keyboard visionary Keith Emerson) With the release of several highly acclaimed albums, the Pär Lindh Project band has garnered worldwide acclaim. After original lead vocalist Magdalena Hagberg sadly passed away in 2007, and a subsequent hiatus by the band, Pär felt the time was right to record and release his next album and recruited the exquisite vocalist Alan Lewis, former Alaska member, who is the most recent vocalist with American prog legends Starcastle. Lewis also adds his tasty solid drum work to the mix. 'Time Mirrors' is a true masterpiece in progressive rock and has been garnered critical acclaim across the planet. The album was nominated for the 'Best CD of 2010' by the Italian Prog Awards.

PLP was a classical rock band with the focus on keyboard-based music. The influences of European classical music is an important part of their sound. This sets them apart from perhaps all other bands in the rock, pop and progressive music world of today. Their classic album GOTHIC IMPRESSIONS was elected in 1997 as one of the top ten progressive rock albums of all time along with groups like YES, GENESIS, ELP, MARILLION, PINK FLOYD and others. The Pär Lindh Project was the most successful Swedish progressive rock band of the 1990s.

Here's what the press have said about Pär Lindh:

“Pär Lindh is the Scandinavian king of the keyboards!” - IO pages

“Pär Lindh is the greatest composer and artist to emerge in the nineties!” - Metamusica

¨Swedish keyboardist, Pär Lindh, stole the equipment show by sitting in on the house concert organ at UCLA Royce Hall, Los Angeles Progfest. His sounds added a new degree of bone-shaking meaning to the phrase ¨pedal tones.¨ - Keyboard Magazine

“Pär Lindh is a phenomenon....His fingers dances on the keyboards…every note so natural and played with such a precision so you can´t help but being filled with admiration.” Jean-Marc Rousse (journalist)

“Lindh is a top notch keyboard player, ranking right up there with the greats that he emulates.” - Music News Network

“What is it that makes PLP so special? For one thing their musicianship is second to none, playing with a verve and skill that many prog acts would envy.” - Geoff Feakes, DPRP reviews

Instrumental Jazz/World Review: Pablo Embon-Funky Side of The Road

Release Date: December 19, 2016
Label: Independent

The last album I heard from Pablo Embon was The World Within back in March. It rapidly became the most read review and remains at #1 on my Write A Music Review site. So, at this point my expectations are already set, I expect more of same…great music, quality sound and a good mixture of genres. So now we have the arrival of Funky Side of The Road coming out in December. It lived up to my expectations in every way possible.

Some of the tracks serve as a good jam session and others have more middle of the road run times. The mixture of jazz, rock and world is very enticing to a listener seeking a variety of sounds or all of them combined. Pablo keeps it fresh and moving from start to finish on this recording.
There is a lot to take in amongst the 12 instrumental tracks on Funky Side of The Road. The operative phrase that is best suited to encapsulate this project is “variety is the spice of life.” Pablo puts ample amounts of spice in his music to give it a life all its own.

“Midnight Blues” reminded of me of a favorite album from the Al Di Meola Project titled Soaring Through A Dream. That was also the year I saw him in San Francisco playing cuts from that album. The track is atmospheric and landing right in the middle of jazz and blues. They are in the same family traveling the same road but take different exits if you will. There is nothing more powerful in a listening experience than validation and familiarity with other favorite artists. It is like being in the here and now and looking back to the past all at the same time.

The tastefully done “Misfortune” has a late night smoky club vibe to it. Delicate and pronounced keyboards make their entrance and pull you away into dreamland. Not quite the funky side until the next track starts.

The playful and provocative “Naughty Lucy” sounds a little Steely Dan goes to the carnival and never gets off the ride. Or better yet, you the listener has a free pass to stay on and you decide to get off (when the track ends!). The carefree playful mood of the track puts a smile in your heart and gets your feet tapping or doing an outright dance on floor, whatever comes first, it works on you and gets you up and out of your seat.

“Our Last Dance” seems like it would be a fitting way to close out the album because of the track name alone. However, this is not the case here, Pablo keeps you guessing and more importantly entertained throughout the run of this album. This one is more of a traditional jazz number that is as smooth and pristine as a shiny new car on the showroom floor. It hollers out to you and invites you to sit down and take a test drive.

Funky Side of The Road is indie music at its very best. A multitude of talent is presented and you get a front row seat to some tastefully done tracks, some have a slower pleasing pace while others grab you and take you for jog around the block and keep you energized. When all is said and done you just heard a very solid and entertaining album full of instrumental jazz and world music.
I took more than a test drive I was there at the starting gate and went to the finish line listening to a fine group of tracks presented by one multi-talented artist.

Jazz Fusion Orchestra BANDZILLA Feat. Guest Appearances By Randy Brecker & Leo Sayer To Release Long-Awaited Second Album "BANDZILLA RISES!"

“BANDZILLA RISES!!! Sounds great!” - Pat Metheny

Los Angeles - What happens when a group of top studio musicians get together in their free time? A unique mixture of sophisticated composition, passionate improvisation, scathing social commentary and biting humor, BANDZILLA play furious funk, sleazy soul, punk jazz and heartfelt ballads. Led by acclaimed composer/arranger/guitarist Richard Niles, the 25-piece jazz-fusion orchestra was originally formed in the studio to play on the seminal Grace Jones track ‘Slave To The Rhythm’. Since then, Niles & BANDZILLA have performed and recorded with Paul McCartney, Ray Charles, James Brown, Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey, Pet Shop Boys, Michael McDonald, Cher and Tina Turner.

Says Richard, “When I formed BANDZILLA, I used the hottest young studio players in London, a band of ‘monsters’: BANDZILLA. We were featured as the house band on a British TV series and released our first album, “Blue Movies” to great critical acclaim. As well as being the ‘go to’ band for some of the biggest artists in the world, we toured with our own music, but eventually it became too impractical to take such a big unit on the road. However, a couple of years ago my friend John Thirkell (who had played trumpet in Bandzilla) called and suggested we do another album. And so, here we are. Bandzilla rises!!!”

Multi-Grammy winner Pat Metheny has called Richard Niles “one of the best composer/arrangers around and a truly exciting musical force.” For his jazz work with Metheny, Bob James, John Patitucci, Martin Taylor, Billy Cobham, Jane Monheit and Bob Mintzer, and his work on over 40 pop hits, Sound on Sound called Niles “the most versatile man in modern music.”

The new album, “BANDZILLA RISES!!!” is an unparalleled musical event - music that defies definition performed by artists beyond category.

Co-producer/trumpet player John Thirkell played with the Buddy Rich and Gil Evans Orchestras as well as on 23 UK & US No.1 records with Artists such as Jamiroquai, Level 42, Tina Turner, Phil Collins and Bruno Mars. Other sublime soloists include Nigel Hitchcock (Tom Jones, Incognito, Mark Knopfler), Mark Nightingale (Clark Terry, John Dankworth) and Steve Hamilton (Billy Cobham, Tommy Smith). Drummer Ian Palmer is the nephew of Carl Palmer (ELP) and has performed with Michael Brecker and Don Grolnick.

Says Richard, “I have worked in many styles - from pop with McCartney, to jazz with Metheny, rock with Michael McDonald and funk with James Brown - and the album reflects this. My songs are driven from the lyrics which might be social commentary, romantic reflections or fantasy stories, using humor to express serious ideas. This is not a traditional jazz record. My artistic imperative is to express myself freely, helped by some of the most brilliant musicians and singers on earth.”

A stellar line up of singers includes Leo Sayer (16 top 10 hits), jazz icon Randy Brecker (The Brecker Brothers), Lamont Dozier Jr. (son of the Motown hit-maker), Daisy Chute (from million-selling vocal group All Angels), Kim Chandler (ace studio singer and vocal coach), Brazilian jazz star Clarice Assad and Polish chanteuse Julia Suzanna Sokolowska. Niles also sings some of his own surprising lyrics.

Here's what's being said about BANDZILLA RISES!!!

“Richard Niles is a great orchestrator and musician and a pleasure to work with.” - Paul McCartney

“Richard Niles is one of the best composer/arrangers around and an exciting musical force.” - Pat Metheny

“… a really well-crafted work...great production, conception and playing” - Randy Brecker

“Super fonky! Holds a place dear to my heart… a very cool project.” - Bob Mintzer

“A masterpiece of contemporary music… the music world needs this recording now more than ever!” -  Danny Gottlieb

“Wow! Hip, entertaining and a very cool new way of treating the big band genre. Bravo!” - Dave Koz

“BANDZILLA is a monster in every way - monster charts performed by monster players and singers. A monster joy to listen to!” - Chris Walden

Rock Legends Lucifer's Friend Release First New Studio Album "Too Late To Hate" In Three Decades! OUT NOW!

London, UK - Much to the excitement of music fans worldwide, rock legends Lucifer's Friend have released their new studio album titled “Too Late To Hate”! This is the band's first true NEW STUDIO ALBUM since 1981!

Lucifer's Friend reformed in 2015 and since then has been playing high profile festival concerts such as the HEADLINE act on 4 Sound Stage the SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL and at the ROCK OF AGES and LORELEY festivals too. The band features core original members John Lawton (ex-URIAH HEEP), Peter Hesslein and Dieter Horns along with long term members Jogi Wichmann and Stephan Eggert.

“ 'Too Late To Hate'....the new studio album, was recorded off the back of our 'comeback' performance at the Sweden Rock Festival. The impetus we gained after recording 4 new studio tracks for the 'Awakening' album was what we needed. Plus the feedback from the 'Live At Sweden Rock Festival' CD, brought about a feeling that we could take on some 'unfinished business'... Lucifer's Friend has been over the years, mostly encamped in the studio recording material that has stood the test of time... However the new studio album 'Too Late To Hate' with 12 original tracks is a sign that we are still very capable of producing good material and bringing it live on stage.” - John Lawton.

Lucifer's Friend formed in 1970 with their influential and groundbreaking self-titled album, famous among connoisseurs of 70's hard rock. Its heavy and majestic overtones made it a pioneer release in rock music.

The group went on to release six albums in that decade. In 1976 Lucifer's Friend suffered a hard blow when British vocalist John Lawton joined Uriah Heep. The band broke up in 1982 and briefly reformed in 1994 as Lucifer's Friend 2 for the album “Sumo Grip”. Now Lucifer's Friend is back, after 30 years with their highly anticipated new album “Too Late To Hate”!

Holiday Instrumental/Acoustic Review: Tom Caufield-I Heard It Was Christmas Day

Release Date: September 6, 2016
Label: Bohemian Embassy

Hearing Holiday music is reserved for the season in which it is celebrated right? Well that is not always the case. At times there is that rare recording dedicated to Christmas classics that can be listened to at any time of year. Tom Caufield’s I Heard It Was Christmas Day happens to be one of those albums.

Caufield easily strums and picks his way into your heart and mind with expert six-string playing. He creates superb textures and intimate sounds that draw you in and keep you.

“I Heard It Was Christmas Day” has a prolific name and the kind of diversity in playing that I found very impressive. Along with Tom’s playing there are some bells jingling in the background that sound like a horse drawn sleigh. It all created a picture in my mind, like a classic Norman Rockwell painting set to this most beautiful and tasteful music.

“Silent Night” was always a song that gave me chills and touched my soul. Tom’s playing is well thought out and tastefully done. Like gentle falling snow with the North Star shining brightly in the sky; his notes hit your consciousness and put you right in the manager with baby Jesus.

Acoustic music with such intricacies and simplicity is difficult to make into something memorable as this album. Tom accomplished this with little help of other instruments besides his guitars. This has a lot going in the background of each track however his guitar is right out front and that is what your senses key in on. If there ever was peripheral hearing like there was sight (like a quarterback seeing the entire field) then this would be the time to use it.

The best thing about this music is that is relaxing and it sets your mind at ease. As the guitar flows, so does your feelings pushed along by the music.

“God Rest You” is a brilliant track. You would never believe it was a Christmas while listening. It comes across more like a soundscape for a good western or some desert scenery. At around the 2 minute mark or so the song shifts so you get a taste of the original melody. I really appreciate the transitions in this track and I thought it was brilliant. It was country meets holiday and they get together for an old fashioned Christmas set to some incredible acoustic music.

There was a lot to like about I Heard It Was Christmas Day and not a thing to complain about. Musical perfection is difficult to arrive at. It seems the more I hear recordings like this I am becoming more convinced that it entirely possible. This album has the full respect and appreciation of my diligent ears and I think many other listeners will feel the same way.
