Jazz/Fusion Legends Mike Clark, James Genus & Dave Stryker To Play The Iridium In NYC - Feb. 10, 2016

NYC – CLARK GENUS STRYKER feat. Jazz/Fusion legends Mike Clark, James Genus & Dave Stryker will be performing at The Iridium in NYC on Feb. 10, 2016!

Event information:

Mike Clark - While often referred to as the “Tony Williams of funk,” Mike Clark considers jazz his first love. He gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock in the early seventies. His incisive playing on Hancock’s “Actual Proof” garnered him an international cult following and influenced generations of drummers. Mike has performed with such well-known jazz greats as Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride, Chet Baker, John Scofield, Nicholas Payton, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Vince Guaraldi, Woody Shaw, Donald Harrison, Albert King, Larry Coryell, Mike Wolff, Wallace Roney, Billy Childs, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Chris Potter, Bobby McFerrin, Nat Adderly, Oscar Brown Jr., and Gil Evans and his Orchestra. For more information go to www.drummermikeclark.com

James Genus - In baseball, “five-tool player” denotes excellence in every aspect of the game—running, throwing, fielding, hitting for average and power. It’s an interesting way to think about the prodigious skills of bass master James Genus, a one-time catcher who eschewed the “tools of ignorance” for music a year before leaving high school. Consider the range of contexts that Genus is navigating during 2013. As electric bassist in the Saturday Night Live house band, his employer since 2000, he propels artists representing a 360-degree range of styles and genres. His pulsing grooves—interlocked with drummer Omar Hakim—animate dance-electronica hitmakers Daft Punk’s chart-topping CD Random Access. With Herbie Hancock, he references an encyclopedic lexicon of harmony and beats on both electric and upright to complement the leader’s anything-goes attitude. For much of this summer and fall he’s showcasing his resonant tone and unfailingly melodic basslines on a world tour with Bob James and David Sanborn behind this year's Quartette Humaine, on which Genus performed with drum grandmaster Steve Gadd.

Dave Stryker - Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 26 CD’s as a leader to date), co-leading The Stryker/Slagle Band, or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” Dave’s new CD “Messin’ with Mister T”, is a celebration of the man he worked with for over a decade-Stanley Turrentine -with ten of the greatest tenor sax players on the scene today. It went to #1 on JazzWeek Radio and stayed in the Top 50 for 20 weeks and has received great reviews including 4 1/2 stars in Downbeat magazine, which picked it as one of the Top CD’s of the year, ran a feature article on Dave, and recently voted him into the 2015 the DB Critics and Readers Poll for the 8th time. Los Angeles, CA - Known worldwide as one of the most important figures in Cajun music, a renowned multi-instrumentalist, master of the fiddle and accordion, distinctive vocalist, and a highly prolific songwriter, Doug Kershaw has spent most of his career mining the rich musical traditions of his home state of Louisiana, from zydeco to Creole-influence country and folk. Kershaw’s own enthusiasm for the songs contained herein has not been diminished at all by the passing years. “I am so proud of this compilation,” Kershaw declares, “It’s like exposing my life to the world. Renaissance is a band with a rich history unique unto themselves as progressive rock pioneers who rose from the ashes of the seminal UK rock band, The Yardbirds. Acclaimed for their unique blending of progressive rock with classical and symphonic influences, the band's career has spanned forty plus years spearheaded by the 5 octave voice of Annie Haslam and the masterful songwriting skills of Michael Dunford. They are widely considered to be the band that most successfully and routinely utilized the sound of a full orchestra in their recordings.

In the early years Renaissance toured Europe extensively. It wasn't long before influential progressive rock stations in the US, such as WNEW (NYC), WMMR (Philadelphia) and WHFS (Washington) were turning on America to Renaissance. Before too long the band started thrilling concertgoers on the world's most distinguished stages, from Carnegie Hall in NYC with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, to the Royal Albert Hall in London with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Chorale Society. In 1978 they had a top ten hit in the UK with 'Northern Lights', which has become a classic radio favorite, still demanding regular airplay to this day.

The band eventually disbanded in the late 1980's at which time Annie Haslam launched a solo career. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the original founding of Renaissance, Michael and Annie in 2009 decided to form a new touring band. More recently they have toured the UK, Belgium, Holland, Israel, Portugal, North America, Canada, Japan and South Korea and produced their first album in 13 years entitled “Symphony of Light”. The album is a testament to the unforgettable melodies that Michael Dunford infused into his work, Michael died prematurely in 2012.

Renaissance toured Europe in April 2015, the first in over 35 years! The tour was very successful and the fans loved every minute!

The current personnel of Renaissance include: Annie Haslam lead vocals, Rave Tesar keyboards, Tom Brislin keyboards, Mark Lambert acoustic guitars, Leo Traversa bass guitar, and Frank Pagano drums.

Alternative / Hard Rock Review: Foo Fighters-Saint Cecilia

Release Date: November 23, 2015
Label: RCA
Taking their name from the mysterious aerial sighting during WWII, Foo Fighters formed in Seattle in 1994, following the break-up Nirvana.  David Grohl (vocals, guitar, drums) was joined by Pat Smear (guitar) and Nate Mendel (bass), with Taylor Hawkins (drums, percussions) and Chris Shiflett (guitar) rounding out the rest of the band.  More than twenty years and eight albums later, they are still going strong.  This is no more evidence than on their latest release, Saint Cecilia. Named after the patron saint of musicians and dedicated to the victims of the Paris terrorists attacks, Saint Cecilia is one extended play that will calm your fears about the state of modern music.

“Saint Cecilia” is a breezy rock song with a down-to-earth sound that is nothing short of a bona fide hit.  It has a great groove and is almost too infectious for its own good, but comes out on the right side of things.  With the type of lyrics that appear to be speaking directly to each listener, “Saint Cecilia” is one memorable and fantastic song that will stay in your head long after the final note ends.  “Sean” is short, punk-inspired song that does not fail to delight.  Its compactness works in its favor and will have you pressing the repeat button for another taste.

With plenty of punk rock flavor, “Savior Breath” comes out rocking and rolling with a fast and gritty sound.  It is a short, intense song that never lets up. “Savior Breath” sounds like it came out decades ago, but with the timeless quality that makes it a good song regardless of its release date.  After the three minute riot that was “Savior Breath,” “Iron Rooster” shows up to slow things down.  This change of pace is a calm, mediating song.  Though I like the lyrics, I think the song feels like it goes on for too long.  Sending things off in style is the “The Neverending Sigh,” with its towering sound riding a wave of thunder to the end.

Saint Cecilia by Foo Fighters is nice addition to their discography.  It is something that their fans will eat up and want second helpings from, while being a good introduction to their music for people new to the band.  If you are into alt rock or hard rock, then I think that it is a good bet to take a chance on Saint Cecilia.  It is one EP that packs more in it than some full length albums.

4/5 Stars

Key Tracks: Saint Cecilia, Savior Breath

1. Saint Cecilia
2. Sean
3. Savior Breath
4. Iron Rooster
5. The Neverending Sigh

New Age/ Piano Instrumental Review: Joe Heinemann-Gratitude

Release Date: January 15, 2016
Label: Independent

Joe Heinemann has been dipping his toe into music since the young age of seven. Studying everything from jazz to classical and dance music, he has progressed to solo piano. This new album is all about leaving something behind. To explore new horizons and know that what you've accomplished is what you were meant to do. It is a theme that resonates with a lot of artists, writers and composers and with this album, the desire is well met.

Gratitude brings us a look at the tender emotions that make up life and living and the knowledge that in one breath, it could be gone in an instant. "Lenape" is the first song on the album, and begins with tender strokes along the piano keys. Each touch of the finger brings meaning and introspection. We are alive. We breathe. We feel-even when it hurts. Strings slide along and whisper sweet nothings alongside the piano movements, crafting a sweet melody that haunts the soul and draws us into the album.

"Sign of Spring" is one of the flagship tunes on the album. It begins with a poignant glimpse into a brisk spring morning, full of hope and expectation. Rain splashes down on the fresh green stalks of grass, each bursting with life. Each keystroke is implemented with a purpose, plodding and well thought out. It is an awakening of the earth and the soul.

"Gratitude" is the title track on the album and a very apt song title. Meaningful keystrokes illustrate emotion, highlighting our inner lives. Gratitude comes when you appreciate the world around you. It is in the small things. The simple act of giving, a lick from a dog who loves you, a tender glance between husband and wife. It is the air we breathe and the essence of our being. With every keystroke, Heinemann illustrates why it matters. To have gratitude is to appreciate life in all of its foibles and idiosyncrasies. To be fully aware that we aren't perfect and to be loved in spite of it.

Joe Heinemann has created an album filled with blissful moments. For days I've listened contently writing while my dogs huddle around my feet in abject happiness. There is joy in the little things and today as rain clouds tease me with the promise of a dark afternoon for writing and thought, I'm grateful for this music and happy canine companionship. Heinemann takes our longing, our late nights and our solace and wraps it up in one neat little album. Every note is right on. Every emotive melody there for us to relish over and over again. And I have-and will again. This album is a must have if you enjoy a quiet interlude away from the world.

5/5 Stars

Key Tracks: Sign of Spring, Gratitude, Lenape

02.Enduring Hope
03.For Satie
04.Sea Dream (Away)
05.Sign of Spring
08.My Song (Carried Along)
10.Golden Waves
11.Late At Night

Free Download of “Questions” Now Available!

Philadelphia, PA (USA) – Often called America's answer to Black Sabbath, one of the most unsung bands in the history of US hard rock music, BANG, is back! With the heaviness of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, coupled with the groove of Grand Funk Railroad, BANG released three critically acclaimed albums on Capitol Records in the early 1970's before disappearing for a number of years. 2016 marks the 44th anniversary of BANG's critically acclaimed debut album and the band is celebrating with a major European tour! This will be the very first tour of Europe for the legendary power trio, which will take them through the UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Denmark. Sweden, Spain and Portugal!

Says lead vocalist and bassist Frank Ferrera, “BANG is extremely grateful for the opportunity to play in front of our European fans...this will be our 1st time overseas and we're excited to share our music with you...”

April 15 - Immerhin - Wurzburg, Germany

April 28 - Geronimo FT - Stockholm, Sweden
April 29 - Rocksound - Barcelona, Spain
April 30 - Sound Bay Festival - Lisbon, Portugal

To listen/download BANG's “Questions”:

Says Frank Ferrara, “Needing one more song for the BANG album...we had Questions....our producer didn't think the song was strong enough to be on the record... we disagreed and convinced him  to add it to the BANG album...Lo and behold it became our first single....it goes to show that sometimes the "BAND" knows best....”

The 1971 self-titled debut album 'BANG' is considered an important forerunner to the early Doom Metal genre. Undoubtedly one of America’s heaviest 'proto-metal' bands from the period, BANG also had a strong sense of melodic power. The band's versatility and songwriting skills are second to none. Highly regarded as a cult act by many for years, it’s now time for this truly amazing rock band to be enjoyed by a new audience worldwide!

Back in the spring of 1972, BANG was shaping up to be the proverbial 'next big thing'. Signed a few months earlier to Capitol Records, the band's first single “Questions” was taking off in the Billboard Hot 100. With the enthusiastic support of their record label, the trio's self-titled debut album was also climbing in the charts. The group's management had them opening shows for just about every major band of the era. Moreover, BANG had recently opened for their all time favorite band Black Sabbath, and by common consensus of opinion, stole the show! With two band members, guitarist Frank Gilcken and lead singer/bassist Frank Ferrara, still in their teens, and drummer/lyricist Tony Diorio, BANG seemed to be unstoppable!

Somehow, though, it didn't quite work out. Even as “Questions” was charting, a corporate shakeup at Capitol saw the band's supporters moving on and replaced by A&R men who had their own signings to promote. With the band's producer, Michael Sunday, also leaving the label, BANG's support system was crumbling. Their new producer engineered a change in personnel that led to drummer/lyricist Tony Diorio’s departure. Meanwhile, the label insisted that BANG develop a more mainstream, pop oriented sound. Trying to keep the dream alive, they changed management companies. With a much more commercial approach, the group released a 3rd album, 'BANG Music' in 1973, which, although did contain some great songs and performances, failed to chart. By 1974, just a couple of years after their initial success, a tired and disillusioned BANG had lost their direction, momentum and self-belief. They went their separate ways.

Despite the relative briefness of their career, BANG left behind a powerful recorded legacy: four albums, including their unreleased 1971 concept album 'Death Of A Country', as well as a trio of non-album tracks that were recorded as singles when their deal with Capitol was about to expire. In 1996, much to everyone's surprise, BANG reunited! The band recorded and released in 1998 a new album titled 'Return To Zero', with the more metal-oriented album titled 'The Maze' (featuring new versions of old favorites “Love Sonnet” and “Bow To The King”) following in 2004, proving once again that the band still had the magic that made them great back in the early 70's!

And now, much to the excitement of their fans, BANG will be performing live in Europe in 2016! Says Frank Ferrara, “The three of us realized that BANG was still a musical force. And even though a lot of years have passed, we were writing songs as if it were yesterday. The dream is alive, and with renewed thirst and love of the music, we are resuming our quest.” With drummer Jake Leger, and the Franks, the band will remain a three piece, sounding just like the records!

Finnish label Svart Records is re-releasing Bang's 4 classic records: Death of a Country, Bang, Mother/Bow to the King , Music Album. They are being re-pressed on both vinyl and CD and will be available early 2016.

The Prog Before Christmas Gig - Abel Ganz, Tiger Moth Tales, we_are_kin

Artist: Abel Ganz, Tiger Moth Tales, we_are_kin
Title:   The Prog Before Christmas Gig
Concert Date: 18th December 2015
Venue: The Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) Glasgow

As the title of this review suggests, the gig I attended on 18th Dec was indeed, The Prog Before Xmas and highlighted 3 artists, We Are Kin, Tiger Moth Tales and Abel Ganz. The evening was several months in the planning and the “main man” behind it all was Dennis Smith, who also happens to be the drummer in Abel Ganz. Running to a strict time restriction, the bands managed to set up, play and remove material from the stage like clockwork.

First up were We Are Kin, who in fact were giving us their very first live performance. Initially the band seemed a little tentative and apprehensive, but quickly settled and produced a stunning 45 minute set. The band had released their debut album, Pandora, on Bad Elephant Records, earlier in 2015. Onstage were 6 musicians, Dan Zambas (keyboards, guitar), Lee Braddock (bass), Emma Brewin-Caddy (vocals), Nuru Ramadhan Saadi (vocals), Gary Boast (drums) and Adam McCann (lead guitar), but due to recent changes only Dan, Gary and Adam remain from the band that recorded Pandora. Pandora is a 13 track album and 7 of the tracks were aired during the set. The opening track, “Home Sweet Home” as I indicated, started a little nervously with several glances passing between the band members, but as they moved into “The Hard Decision” and further into the set, the nerves settled and they relaxed into the music and the crowd were treated to some excellent modern progressive music. Fronted by the two female vocalists, (Emma and Nuru), having a solid rhythmic foundation (courtesy of Lee and Gary), some soaring guitar work (Adam) and completed with the majestic keyboards (Dan), the band received a rousing cheer at the end of the set by the appreciative audience. It was difficult to believe that this was the debut live performance, and certainly bodes well for a great future.

A quick removal of much stage equipment and soon the stage was set for the second set, provided by Tiger Moth Tales, which is the name of the creative vehicle for Peter Jones. Peter has been in the music industry for many years, winning the junior final of BBC TV’s Song For Christmas (1988), being a finalist on BBC’s Star For A Night (2001) and also on ITV’s The X Factor (2004) as well as touring with The X Factor Tour in 2005. Since Peter has moved into the progressive music area, he has released 2 full length albums, Cocoon (2014) and Storytellers Vol 1 (2015), as well as some live material EPs. Tiger Moth Tales is simply Peter sitting at a keyboard with a guitar fixed horizontally above and across the top of the keyboard. As soon as Peter started, the crowd realized that this was something very special and the conversations in the crowd, that sometimes permeate performances, simply stopped. Peter gave a superb selection of music, mainly from the Cocoon album (“Tigers in The Butter,” “Don’t Let Go..Feels Alright,” “The Merry Vicar,” “A Visit To Chigwick”) one track from Storytellers Vol 1 and 2 covers from one of his favorite bands, Genesis, in the form of “More Fool Me” and “Harold The Barrel.” The audience laughed away as Peter explained how he would shout out at concerts asking Genesis tribute bands to play “Harold” and he realized it had become an obsession when he shouted out the same request at a Steve Hackett concert. The set was excellent from start to finish with music of the highest quality, as Peter is a very accomplished musician with a voice that is so powerful and clear, and the humor he injected by including “The Merry Vicar” and “A Visit To Chigwick” made this 45+ minutes a majestic and mesmerizing part of the evening. (Although not aware at that moment, Peter would make another appearance later in the night).

With another relatively quick period of dismantling, removal and replacing stage equipment, the stage was set for the arrival of Abel Ganz. Abel Ganz are a Glasgow band, and 2015 certainly seems to have been the year of the “breakthrough” and this Prog Before Xmas concert was to celebrate a return to the Centre For Contemporary Arts, where the year had started way back in January. The band was originally put together all the way back in 1980 by Hew Montgomery (keyboards) and Hugh Carter (multi-instrumentalist) and has undergone several personnel changes over the years as well as releasing 6 studio albums along the way. The band on stage comprised Denis Smith (drums), Steven Donnelly (bass), Davie Mitchell (lead guitar), Iain Sloan (guitar), Jack Webb (keyboards) and Mick McFarlane (vocals and guitar), but also present in the audience were those 2 founding members of the band, Hew and Hugh. Launching into “Rain” from the Danger of Strangers album (1988), the band soon had the audience eating out of their hand. This opener was followed by “Ventura” from the album, Shooting Albatross (2008) which was received as raucously as the opener and then the band moved onto the latest release, simply called Abel Ganz, from 2014. First up was the 5 part suite from the album, clocking in at well over 20 minutes, “Obsolescence Pt 1-5”, and a stunning live interpretation which led on to “Recuardos,” a much gentler paced track which fitted the proceedings like a glove. The music was cranked up a little for the rousing “Unconditional” and unbelievably that was the set almost complete. The crowd had been treated to a stunning 60+ minute set of progressive music, veering from powerful driving rock to the gentle acoustic moments and showed their appreciation by demanding the band return to the stage. Several moments later, the cheer that erupted ushered the band back on stage. The first piece of music they moved into was “Thank You,” from the Abel Ganz album, one of the gentler pieces of music with stunning guitar work and a nice little Gaelic verse thrown in for good measure. This piece of music also had a personal meaning as it was the piece chosen to finish my wedding ceremony in April 2015, and it made for a special moment as The Landlady (my wife) was also at the gig. There is no praise high enough to use to describe the overall evening with the band hitting the bulls-eye right from the off.

A truly wonderful evening of music provided by 3 excellent artists and it wasn’t quite finished. When “Thank You” finished to huge applause, there was a flurry of activity at one side of the stage and joining Abel Ganz on stage appeared Tiger Moth Tales himself, Peter Jones, clutching his trusty recorder. The final piece of music “Run With The Fox,” originally released just prior to Christmas 1981 by Chris Squire and Alan White, was the perfect ending to a perfect evening.

To sum up the evening is simple as it was just a magnificent night of superb music from 3 artists who, in turn, each provided excellent entertainment and for the crowd, made sure that Christmas arrived a week early.

Lunden Reign's Debut Album "American Stranger" Receives Multiple "Best Album/Songs of the Year" Awards for 2015!

“A bunch of top-notch rock songs that feel both fresh and timeless.” - Chris C., BloodyGoodMusic.com

Los Angeles – Alternative rock ensemble Lunden Reign's debut album “American Stranger” was released in March 2015 to critical acclaim across the globe. Along with a multitude of positive reviews worldwide, the album received multiple “Best Album/Song of the Year” Awards in 2015!

“We are truly appreciative and flattered by all the incredible interviews, reviews and airplay we’ve received for our debut album, 'American Stranger',” says band leaders Nikki Lunden & Laura Espinoza-Lunden. “Now we are so humbled and appreciative that 'American Stranger' is making multiple music magazines year-end top album and song lists! THANK YOU to those that are helping to support and showcase Lunden Reign's music and messages to the world!”

Bloody Good Music's Top Ten Albums of the Year – New York
“Not many bands begin their career with a concept album, but that's what Lunden Reign did here, and the result is an album that brings the classic Heart sound to a new generation. This is a tightly-wound album of classic rock that features some glorious guitar tones, and well-crafted songs all around. Concept album can also get bogged down in the gimmick, but that doesn't happen here, as the album can be taken on face value as a bunch of top-notch rock songs that feel both fresh and timeless. It's the kind of record that's easy to overlook, but well worth the effort to give it a try. The only thing I can't speak to is the story of the record, as I was only sent a download without any of the lyrics or liner notes.”

Bloody Good Music's Top 12 Songs of the Year “Mary” – New York
“This is classic rock done the right way. It sounds like the love child of Heart and Led Zeppelin, and rocks just as much. The way the vocal strains just enough in the chorus drives home the emotion of the song, while the hook has a way of sticking with you more than you'd expect.”

Highwire Daze Magazine #9 Top Albums of 2015 – Hollywood, CA
The band has an interview in the 25th Anniversary print version which includes the top 10 listing and features photos by rock photographer Jack Lue.

AKADEMIA MUSIC AWARDS “Best Alt Rock Album” – Hollywood, CA
In July, 2015, “American Stranger” was Voted “Best Alt Rock Album” by AKADEMIA MUSIC AWARDS (Hollywood, CA). “Lunden Reign’s album ‘American Stranger’ has all the compositional invention and production competence required for radio greatness – and a frayed emotional filament that travels deep in the hinterlands of true art, as well.”

Also, Lunden Reign's “Hear Me” will be the first entry in Warren Kurtz “Fabulous 2015 Songs” feature for Goldmine Magazine (Wisconsin), covering 20 songs from 2015.

Says Nikki and Laura, “We believe 2016 for Lunden Reign is going to be an even more incredible year! We are already back in the studio creating our 2nd album 'Confessions' and once-again teaming with platinum-selling producer co-writer Luis Maldonado (producer and co-writer of 'American Stranger'. We also hope to be performing in more festivals around the country this summer and crossing our fingers for increased airplay of our songs. FYI, watch for us as we will be in the audience of the 58th Annual Grammy Awards! Next year we hope we will be on the stage as well! Thank you all for you support!”

The band will be headlining at the legendary Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles on Saturday February 6th!  (http://www.whiskyagogo.com/site/event/lunden-reign/) Already some of rock's legends have joined Lunden Reign on stage including TERRI NUNN of BERLIN, PRESCOTT NILES of THE KNACK and DALE BOZZIO of MISSING PERSONS. Some of these performances are available on YouTube.

Lunden Reign is composed of two core members: Nikki Lunden (Lead Vocals/Guitar/Composer) and Laura Espinoza-Lunden (Guitar/Composer). Producer Luis Maldonado joins as guitarist on select shows and the duo tours with some of LA’s top musicians including: Matt Denis (bass) & Matt Lucich (drums). Lunden Reign's music is described as 'Big Beat Alternative Rock' or 'Modern Classic Rock'. Some say it's the signature album for “ROCK's REBIRTH”. The band's debut concept album “American Stranger” was released on Cleopatra Records March 17, 2015 and began receiving world-wide critical acclaim almost immediately. The 10 original songs are scored with layers of haunting melodies, uplifting guitar riffs blended with a sharp edge and a massive beat.

Here's what's being said about Lunden Reign:

Dale Bozzio (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons): “'American Stranger' is a masterpiece! Every song is great!”

Terri Nunn (lead singer of Berlin): “Laura is a great songwriter and musician. I listened to (American Stranger) a couple of times. My favorites are 'LOVE IN FREE FALL,' 'HEAR ME' and 'THE LIGHT.' I loved the passion of 'HEAR ME' …that’s my most favorite one.”

Prescott Niles (The Knack): “Every so many years an album comes out that redefines modern music. 'AMERICAN STRANGER' is that next album. Today the cycle goes full with a long-awaited return to music that touches the soul and embraces the test of time.”

Candice Marshall (BongoBoy TV 6-15) “This is the kind of (video) I would wait up all night for as a young girl with shows like 'Saturday Night Videos' and eventually, 'MTV'. They are quickly becoming a favorite in my collection!”

Ray Shasho (Classic Rock Music Review 3.5.15) “(American Stranger) is an extraordinary-high-energy- esoteric rock gem, integrated with profound lyrical content, that I felt compelled to applause this exciting new progressive-rock powerhouse.”

Gary Brown (ClassicRockRadio.co.uk) “…For a modern rock band publicly described as being, big beat / alternative rock, I decided what we have here is a new rock band with an appreciation for the rock and roll before them. Touching on old school vibes, yet emitting their own fresh, and unique sound.”

Luc Ghyselen (Keys & Chords Magazine/Web Belgium 2.14.15): “'American Stranger' is one complete story. Lunden Reign brings melodic rock that also fans of mainstream rock and even pop should appeal to.”

Chris C. (Bloody Good Music NY 3.18.15) “'American Stranger' is a strong outing for a debut album, and a needed statement to redefine the ways we see women in rock music.... Lunden Reign defies expectations, and they've made a strong case for themselves. 'American Stranger' is a fantastic example of modern classic rock.”

Instrumental New Age Review: Robert Linton-Beyond The Clearing

Release Date: January 5, 2016
Label: October Moon Records

Beyond The Clearing is Robert Linton’s third studio release. My introduction to Robert was the track “Aside the River Bed.” It was featured on our Rate The Tracks site. His delicate guitar playing led me along the river and I felt like I was there, one with nature.

If music moves you enough to be picturesque then it is doing what intends to. Instrumental tracks must create something other than an auditory experience for the listener. Without words there is no story right? This is not always the case when someone knows how to deliver a message with music alone. Mr. Linton accomplishes this with a flair and excellence on Beyond The Clearing.

“Lingering Rustle” certainly holds a meaning. It is a sound, perhaps a feeling one has, something is moving and trying to tell you something. That lingering could be a feeling you have internally, whether it’s an urging, a rumbling in the stomach or just a voice within giving you direction. That fact that it is lingering indicates that it will not go away unless addressed. This song is very gentle in its approach and Robert
paints the sky with the gentle pastels of his decisive guitar lines. Other instruments come into the picture and are then sprinkled in ever so slightly to accentuate the atmosphere and sincere feeling of the track.

As always I leave the interpretation of each song to each individuals own perception. I look at the CD cover, the title of the track and listen intently then put all of that together as each track develops and then I start feeling certain things and begin seeing a movie unfold in my mind’s eye. This can only happen with exceptional music and this album passed the test.

The title track is always significant and the artist holds up his end of that expectation with “Beyond The Clearing.” Once again gentle acoustic and melodic guitar lines whisper on the wind as it swirls around your being you begin to feel like you are melting into the scenery unfolding in your mind. It is the very essence of beauty and perfection much like the natural surroundings that Robert is standing in the middle of on the cover of this album. A man, his thoughts and his guitar take the barren hot desert and turn it into his own personal heaven. What was once looked at as a desolate and lonely place blooms into a haven of peace and solitude that a spiritual individual can appreciate and want to return to.

Beyond The Clearing is a work of art that an artist with a clear vision of what he wanted to present to a listening audience. The sheer beauty of one instrument leading you down the path of completion and satisfaction is what awaits you inside this music. The sounds and colors that paint this musical canvas are bright with life and the promise of a new day. What more could one ask from a recording?

Blues Hall of Fame Singer Sari Schorr Recording New Album With Legendary Producer Mike Vernon and Performing Selected US Dates

“With a powerhouse voice and a band to match this lady will certainly entertain. With whispers of Joplin and Turner her honeyed tones will raise the roof off the marquee.” – BLUES ON THE FARM, UK

NYC - In January 2015 legendary producer Mike Vernon (Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall, Blue Horizon) was invited to receive a ‘Keeping The Blues Alive’ award at the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN. This award, was not the only highlight of the weekend for Mike; the second was witnessing the performance of one of the most amazing female blues singers Mike had seen in years – SARI SCHORR.

So knocked out was he with Sari, Mike came out of retirement to produce an album with her. Already a consummate songwriter, with tracks on major labels, Sari has written or co-written most of the songs on her new album. This album recording is now well underway and delivers hard-driving Blues-Rock influenced by the late '60s British Blues movement. Sari (who trained as an opera singer) mixes Blues, Rock, and Soul with concrete melodies and poetic lyrics to striking effect.

Years of touring the US and Europe with Joe Louis Walker and Poppa Chubby, brought Sari greater prominence throughout the blues world. Schorr was recently inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame.

Sari will celebrate the release of her debut album on Manhaton Records in 2016 and undertake a US and European tour. She kicks off her groundbreaking tour at Carnegie Hall NYC, performing at The Lead Belly Fest with Buddy Guy, Eric Burdon, Edgar Winter and Walter Trout, on February 4, 2016.

Says Sari, “I set out to write achingly honest songs about finding love, losing love, betrayal, addiction, and the beauty and the tragedy of this human experience. My life’s passion is to use music as a galvanizing force to repair, inspire and unite people. To get there, I had to come clean and stonewall any constraints on the writing and performance of the songs. Then I had to learn to trust my intuition. Making an album is like building a pyramid in the dark. You know what you want to end up with, but you don’t really know what you have until there’s some distance and light.

"My songs are rooted in the blues and honoring that long tradition is important to me.  My style of songwriting draws heavily on contrasting melodic hooks with aching harmonies. Writing honest and inspired lyrics is always the goal. I rely heavily on imagery and play with double entendres. My influences are many and various and include Son House, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Lead Belly, Etta James, Bessie Smith, Freddie King, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Peter Green, Robert Plant and Bob Dylan.

"The album was written in the US, UK, Spain, and Germany. The band recorded most of the basic tracks in London and Seville. I'm so honored to have such incomparable musicians on the album including Innes Sibun, Walter Trout, Oli Brown, John Baggott and the wonderful Martha Velez."

Sari mixes a passion for music and with a duty of social responsibility. She has devoted her talent and energy to music projects of a grand scale for humanitarian causes. Most notable is her work on a “Toast to Freedom” for Amnesty International, where she collaborated with many musical legends including Warren Haynes, Levon Helm, Keb Mo', Taj Mahal, Eric Burdon, and Carly Simon. Sari’s humanitarian efforts include work in Haiti and India. She founded Matters – a non-profit that draws attention to humanitarian causes through the arts.

Sari is a marathon runner, animal rights activist, and aspiring vegan. She is also a writer, philosopher and wanderer with an inquisitive nature. She currently lives in Brooklyn with her husband and pit bull triplets.

Sari's new band THE ENGINE ROOM, features stunning British guitarist Innes Sibun, formerly with Robert Plant. Says Sari, “Making an authentic connection with my audience is everything to me. I can push my vocals to the limit when I feel the energy from the audience rush the stage. I’m transformed when people are consumed by my music.”

Band Members:
Innes Sibun (guitar) - Robert Plant
Anders Olinder (keys) - Glenn Hughes, PP Arnold, Peter Gabriel (sessions)
Mike Hellier (drums) - Mud Morganfield, Waterboys, James Hunter
Kevin Jefferies - Roger Taylor (with Jeff Beck), Mike Oldfield and Steve Harley
also US tour special guest:
Chris Bergson (guitar) - Hailed as “a serious talent” by Living Blues, Chris Bergson was inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame in February 2015. With MOJO Magazine's #1 Blues Album of 2008, #2 Blues Album of 2011, and #3 Blues Album of 2014, New York guitarist/singer Chris Bergson has established himself as “one of the most inventive songwriters in modern blues music” (All Music Guide), creating his own blend of blues, roots and soul. Chris Bergson has performed and/or shared the stage with Hubert Sumlin, Levon Helm, B.B. King, Norah Jones, John Hammond, Etta James, and Bettye LaVette, to name just a few. (www.chrisbergson.com)

Here's what the media have raved about Sari Schorr:

“New York vocalist Sari Schorr has the effortless range and sense of drama to give any song real purpose and tonight she connects with her showcase crowd as if delivering a personal message face to face.” - PETE FENESTRA, GET READY TO ROCK

“So, how far will Sari go? Somewhere towards the top of the glass ceiling of the Blues, for certain, as she is a genuine talent.” - DARREN WEALE, WRC

“Sari Schorr is a stunning vocalist, powerful, energized and engaging…. Sari Schorr and other members of the band took the song to church and made believers of us all.” - JIMI PATRICOL, BLUES 411

“Sari Schorr is the embodiment of the best the blues and beyond has to offer. Sari is definitely the next big blues diva that will sweep through the blues scene.” - DAVE FIELDS, BIG CITY RHYTHM & BLUES MAGAZINE

AWARDED: 2012 Best Performance by a Blues Singer in a Band. “The sensational Sari Schorr who channeled Janis Joplin and Tina Turner during the show by the Joe Louis Walker Band at B.B. King's in August.” - BROADWAY WORLD

“A Phenomenal and Beautiful Singer who I like to say, ‘Let's all her passion and artistry come out through her amazing voice.'” - TREVOR B. POWER, WNTI

“Bodacious-voiced new front singer Sari Schorr, whose power vocals are a hybrid of Janis Joplin and Tina Turner, with a touch of a contemporary female blues singer like Janiva Magness. Walker and Schorr reached an orgasmic climax on this section of the show with the Willie Dixon’s classic 'I Just Want to Make Love to You'…and Schorr transitioning from a whisper to a wail like a car going from zero to 60 in an eye blink.” - STEPHEN HANKS

“…the very talented Sari Schorr, who has the raw vocal power of Lydia Pense (Cold Blood)’’ - DAN D. HARRELL, BLUESWAX

“(Mike) Zito called up New York City’s blues ambassador Poppa Chubby and singer Sari Schorr. Schorr contributed husky come-hither vocals to a rollicking 'Sugar Coated Love.'” - DEBRA DEVI, AMERICAN BLUES SCENE MAGAZINE

In closing Sari has this to impart, “The message of the album is to dream big, be fearless and imperfect, defeat anger with gratitude, embrace freedom, succeed then fail then succeed again, and know in the deepest darkness of your heart that there is a purpose to your beautiful and complicated life.”

Melodic Metal Review: Crimson Sun-Towards the Light

Release Date: August 3, 2015
Label: Maple Metal Records

Hailing from the northern land of Finland, Crimson Sun is a modern melodic metal band that deserves some serious attention. Formed in 2001 in the city of Kotka, the band consists of Sini Seppälä (vocals), Miikka Hujanen (keyboards), Antti Rantavuo (drums), Jukka Jauhiainen (bass), and Joni Junnila (guitars). Towards the Light is their debut album and it is a marvelous achievement that is something to behold. If you are into the harmonious and yet crushing sounds of melodic metal, then Crimson Sun is the band for you. With ten songs clocking in at just over forty minutes, Towards the Light is a relentlessly rocking ride from beginning to end.

Towards the Light gets off to a killer start with the pulse-pounding “The Storm.” It is a deliciously good song with a smooth, hard, and crushing sound. The vocals are powerful, enticing, and all-together top notch. And the catchy chorus is quintessential melodic metal. This is the type of song that makes one fall in love with a band. Next up is “Eye of the Beholder” and it features more melodic goodness. It does not have quite as much pop as the opener, but it still works wonders with its darker tone. Once again, the vocals are hypnotically good, and the music gets nice and heavy near the end.

“Awaken” ups the ante with its spirited and vibrant atmosphere that never slows down. It is sweeping and grand, and has an epic quality to it that I am thinking it would fit nicely in a fantasy film. The song is so infectious that you can just sit back and let the music take you away to a distant land of your dreams. “Towards the Light” is a solid song, but it does not jump out at you the way a title track should, and is overshadowed by the album’s more dynamic songs. “The Herald” spices things up with its dark and heavy opening that leads seamlessly into the vibrant melodic metal that has so dominated the album. And, of course, the vocals are stunning again.

“Enter the Silence” is the kind of song that is hard to not listen to. It is simple captivating with its haunting atmosphere and enthralling chorus. The vocals are nothing short of fantastic. It is a contender with “The Storm” for best song on the album. This is melodic metal at its finest, and it is the type of moment on an album that has me thinking about what this band is going to do in the future. “The Spark” is a light and an uplifting song, as light melodic metal can be. It is one of those times when the keyboards really make the song, it’s not melodic metal with the keyboards, and they work quite well with the guitars during the instrumental solo. “Memories Burning” takes the tempo down a notch for peak emotional impact. It is a fantastic and moving song that leaves a lasting impression as the music fades away.

Crimson Sun’s Toward the Light is more than a solid debut. It has all the makings of the first step in a marvelous discography. I would not say that this album is a game changer that is going to turn the genre on its head, but it is still a gorgeous listen. From start to finish, it is a delight. If you are into melodic metal, then this is a must have.

Instrumental New Age Reviews:Raphael Groten-Journey Home

Release Date: July, 17, 2015
Label: Silent Wing Records

Raphael Groten takes the six string acoustic guitar and turns it into a magic wand on his recent release Journey Home.

The first track I had the pleasure hearing from this talented man was “Sweetness,” which is included here and it was also a featured track on our Rate The Tracks site.

This album gets in touch with our natural surroundings and with the most important element, the giver of life and water. “Black River,” “Waves” and “Ebb and Flow” (the ebb and flow of life?) are three that will push you in the right direction or downstream if you will. Music, water, all-encompassing nature, this is life and everything in existence.
Groten has complete command of his instrument. As he becomes one with nature so he does with his guitar. This music soothes the soul and calms the frazzled nerves. It is so simplistic and straightforward that it becomes easy to assimilate and picture each title in your mind’s eye. One has to be quiet internally to meditate and center and this music serves the same purpose if you let it.

Also the four sequential “Journey” tracks serve a higher purpose. As you take in nature and all its beauty it is a journey with facets and twists and turns like the imaginary river you are walking along or just sitting peacefully by. The first is “Journey Home: Awakening” followed by Breath, Echoes and then Arrival to the destination you seek.
It all makes perfect sense and is pieced together with logic and purpose. If you really listen to the singularity of Groten’s guitar it will all come together for you. It certainly did for me and when I listened and looked at all the track titles and how they progressed it was like putting on a perfect set of new shoes.

I really enjoyed every track on this recording, however I listed the key tracks for their significance in title, besides the fact that they were all stellar compositions of beauty and grace.

Raphael Groten chose the right people to work with that would understand his music. Will Ackerman is a fine guitar player and producer himself so it is not hard to imagine why this project turned out so well.

Journey Home can hold different meanings for everyone but I know one thing for certain, if you like solo acoustic guitar music you will love this album! It is perfect just the way it is.
