Cleopatra Records Set To Release Debut Album From Australian/Iranian Industrial Duo VOWWS!

Los Angeles, CA - With a 20+ year reputation for uncovering the best in dark underground music from all over the world, L.A.-based independent label Cleopatra Records is proud to announce the hugely anticipated debut album by one of their new premier roster artists, industrial-pop duo VOWWS. A cross-continental and cross-cultural pairing, guitarist/vocalist Matt (touring musician for indie darling Soko) and keyboardist/vocalist Rizz (Iranian, Costa Rican born) met in Sydney Australia before moving to NYC in 2011 where their debut album The Great Sun began to take shape. Produced by Kevin McMahon, whose work with Swans and The Walkmen has earned much deserved praise, The Great Sun elevates the icy cold synth and guitar noise distortion of classic industrial music to new artistic heights. With tracks like “Stranger,” “Councillor,” and “Holy Youth,” VOWWS marry catchy pop melodies with dark, expressive lyrics, distorted vocals, and heavy atmospheres to create a unique sound. The band even gained the attention of industrial music godfather Gary Numan, who sings a stunning duet on the album track “Losing Myself In You.” The band’s videos, all self-shot and self-edited, have been buzzed about on Consequence Of Sound, Culture Collide, Interview Magazine, Brooklyn Vegan, Buzzbands L.A. and many others. VOWWS’ impressive live shows have earned them spots on this year’s New Noise Festival alongside Ariel Pink, Run The Jewels, Black Lips, and Prayers as well as performances with Tamaryn, William Control, Jennie Vee, L.A. Witch, and Lawrence Rothman. The Great Sun will be released October 30 on both CD and vinyl, and will coincide with a first-ever “VOWWS Takeover Day,” which will give the band full control of Cleopatra’s social properties for a full 24 hours!

New Age/World Instrumental Review: Bill Leslie-Across The Water

Release Date: October 4, 2015
Label: Capitol Broadcasting Company

Bill Leslie has won numerous awards for his recordings over the years and it stands to reason that momentum will continue with the recent release of another instrumental classic titled Across The Water.

Across The Water is a 12 track tribute to Ireland including 10 songs composed by Leslie and two traditional tunes. The album features superlative musicians performing on acoustic guitar, grand piano, violin, cello, oboe, accordion, Celtic whistles, flutes, harp, uilleann pipes and stand-up bass.

The title track turns the page on the story that unfolds to a gracious and inviting introduction and from that point each track seamlessly blends into the next as the colors and textures change as the journey moves along. The combination of several instruments makes for a new age/world treat for the senses.

“Gaelic Ghost” which was featured on the Rate The Tracks site, really sets the tone and atmosphere for the premise of this recording. If you are not recognizing the Celtic essences of this track you are either oblivious to the world around you or just ignoring the beauty that is enveloping you at the moment. This is all about the long lineage and history of the people that shaped a land far away from our shores here in the U.S. but also a reminder of the immigrants that helped to make our great country.

I hear a longing and sadness and in the same instance a joyful remembrance of days long past in this music. The emotion and meaning found in these instrumental compositions are what stand out the most. "Irish Girl” framed it all for me with one listen. The precise piano playing, longing violin and enchanting flute give it a traditional feel helped along with today’s marvelous studio techniques and superb mastering.

I think it’s safe to say that Bill Leslie has created yet another masterpiece that will garner plenty of attention on a global scale. Inside this music is history, tradition and a beauty that has been lost in our high tech society. If you are feeling numb, listless and need some culture and colorful sounds to brighten and enhance your day give this album a spin, it is likely to change your perspective on things that you never considered before. Thought provoking music has a way of doing that.

Rock-Pop Review: Ann Wilson-The Ann Wilson Thing! - #1

Release Date: October 9, 2015
Label: Rounder

A Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Ann Wilson is well known for her stellar voice and textured songs, primarily from her time with Heart. This year a much awaited solo EP has hit the shelves with a mix of original and cover songs. Focusing on blues and rock, she brings back to life many timeless classics and adds one of her own.

“Fool No More” is the original piece on the album. Electric guitar riffs are met with percussive kisses and sweltering vocals that make you long for a tall glass of ice water. Raw and twisting, the emotive lyrics stir the soul with images of dreams and empty hours spent in leisure and aimless pursuits. The guitar growls, twisting and flicking like the tail on a cat, pensive and full of beautiful menace.

Ray Charles would have been proud to hear Wilson’s rendition of his song “The Danger Zone.” A muzzy bit of vocalization winds around the listener, with breathless anticipation. A light blues feel with keyboard antics and a back bayou sense of rhythm, this piece has a tinny effect that warbles with each utterance.

“For What It’s Worth” is a jovial piece with vibrant drums and hip twisting action. A cover for the Buffalo Springfield classic, this song is hopping. Wilson rips through the lyrics and raises them back up to dizzying heights, embracing the essence of the time the song was written. Textured guitar playing licks over you and there is just no way to sit still while you absorb the magic.

“Ain’t No Way” is a resurrection of Aretha Franklin’s song. Earthy and full of the frustrations of life, the piece is blended with multi-instrumentation and Wilson’s stellar vocals. Reaching deep or skimming the surface, she makes the song her own, belting out the heartfelt emotions of women everywhere as they negotiate matters of the heart with the men in their lives. At times sharp, and often poignant the song is one of my favorites on the album.

From being part of Heart to her new solo EP, Wilson sings with purpose and conviction, laying claim to the songs she covers and even creating a new classic piece of her own with “Fool No More.” This EP is a must for any fan of Heart, The Pretenders, Elle King, Joan Jett or Blondie. Some voices just stick with you and Ann Wilson-she’s got it. Great EP and I can’t wait to hear what’s next.

New Age Instrumental Review: Agrelia’s Castle-Elders & Ancestors

Release Date: September 1, 2015
Label: Mysterium Music
My introduction to Agrelia’s Castle was their title track “Elders & Ancestors.” It was featured on Rate The Tracks and made quite an impression on me. When I found out the story behind the music it became even more powerful of an experience for me.

The songs on Elders & Ancestors have grown from the journey of Paul and April Brown together through the challenges of cancer. They come from the desire to create peace, joy, and hope. In that creative experience in music that was the final outcome. I believe many people can benefit from a life’s journey translated through sounds.
The couple combines the sounds of a vintage Fender Rhodes B3, sounds of nature, and beautiful angelic vocals. The vocals are indeed heaven sent from the heart of the giver directly to the recipient. Also there are Native American style flutes, guitars, cello, and sitar. They are very earthy tones and inviting sounds to pull in the listener. In this amazing life it takes the people dealing with the most adversity at times to create exceptional beauty through their artistry. This is a case when those of us more fortunate become grateful and more appreciative for what we have.

“Breathe” is a superbly layered presentation of instruments and vocals. The sitar, percussion and vocals have a mystical element that is simply mesmerizing and comforting. The act that gives life, breathing, takes on an entirely different meaning through this song. Middle Eastern influences permeate the essence of this track and it is like talking a walk through a vast desert of emotion that heals and renews your soul.

“Spirit Dreaming” is another track that just took me away to another place, a safe haven for the heart, body and soul. I feel blessed to have the opportunity for this music to enter my life and give me some solace. Every fear and worry just melts away while listening to this. This particular track features the flute and it gets one in touch with the connection humans have with mother earth and all her wondrous gifts.

Music has always been a spiritual experience for me regardless of the genre. This type of music takes that feeling to another level entirely. Look at the cover of this album and you will get an idea of the places the music can take you. The combinations of what surrounds us in nature and instruments made from the earth becomes one breathing and living entity that invites you in and never lets you go.

I did not want this recording to end as it gave me such peace and contentment, the kind one feels when the stars align and all is right in the world. Enter Agrelia’s Castle and I promise you will never want to leave. The song “Sonnet” delivers a profound message about how life is just time passing by and how it’s just “you and I,” referring to one’s soul mate whether human or one with four legs, it does not matter. I know when I look in my dog’s eyes I see love, purity and the essence of who we are and what we were meant to be. The love of that creature has no bounds or expectations, it’s unconditional. We all can learn a lot from them.

This music inspires, heals, and creates visions and reminders of who we are or what we can be. The Brown’s have created a masterful presentation of nature and music that is certain to move you in some way and give you a renewed perspective of your existence on this planet.

UK Hitmakers Cutting Crew Release First New Album In Ten Years! OUT NOW!

London, UK - CUTTING CREW has announced details of their first new material for ten years. The multi-million selling, Grammy nominated UK outfit fronted by Nick Van Eede were responsible for one of the biggest hits of the 1980s - with (I Just) Died In Your Arms – and the band’s revelatory new album entitled Add To Favourites is their strongest to date and is OUT NOW on In Like Flynn Records, via Cherry Red Records.

A single from the album – the Jackson Browne/George Harrison-tinged Till The Money Run$ Out - was released on September 4th. With some glorious Californian harmonies Van Eede sings “Now you said that you like to play the field/And I should get over it/But when all of your games got to be revealed/I was the last to hear of it,”

It’s hardly surprising that (I Just) Died In Your Arms is seen as songwriter Nick Van Eede’s greatest achievement and yet this Pyrrhic victory surely masks Van Eede’s subsequent song-writing collaborations with artists including Mika, Pixie Lott, Marillion and Cher.

Add To Favourites, which features guitarists Gareth Moulton and Joolz Dunkley, bassist Nick Kay, keyboardist Jono Harrison, drummer Martyn Baker and the Blackjack Horns, is Van Eede’s “tip of the hat to artists I’ve always adored” – from Otis Redding to Frank Zappa(!)

The album also tackles weighty subjects such as relatives and friends gone too soon (Van Eede lost both his younger brother and his long-time Cutting Crew bedfellow Kevin MacMichael some time ago) on Looking For A Friend and the Berlin Wall on Berlin In Winter which Van Eede performed live in Berlin at the 25th Anniversary of The Wall’s demise last November.

Van Eede has revealed that he wrote “80% of the album under water” and the album’s startling artwork featuring our protagonist emerging as a knight from a swimming pool is inspired by the fact that Van Eede is a supremely gifted swimmer and that several of his friends have suggested he would be able to swim a mile whilst wearing full body armour. A full UK tour – due to take place above ground - is set to be announced in the next few weeks.

Folk Review: Cynthia Chitko-Days Gone By Remembered

Release Date: June 15, 2015
Label: Promotion Music Records

Cynthia Chitko is an artist with a deep emotional investment in her music. Days Gone by Remembered is Chitko’s sophomore album and reaches deeper into in a folk sound with country and Americana foundations. Songs of remembrance and focus on the family are rich with expressive elements, vocals and instrumentation. Artists on this album include Peter Phippen (Fender bass, William Hall & Son boxwood flute), Randy Sabien (violin, mandolin), Ivan Lunde Jr (frame drum, Rain FX), Robert Baca (trumpet), Terrence Karr (tabla drums) and of course Cynthia Chitko on acoustic guitar and vocals.

In an album that scrapes against the raw emotions of being human Days Gone by Remembered is a look into the fiber of the artist’s soul. One of the most striking pieces was “My Innocence”. It tells of a young girl whose innocence was stolen at the hands of someone very close to her. This piece will resonate with anyone who has ever had a similar experience. The pain suffered travels across time, even when the perpetrator dies. The acoustic guitar, frame drum and Fender bass blend with Cynthia’s seamless vocals to portray feels that most consider too difficult in general conversation, let alone a well-built song. This song is for all of us that have been wounded in such a way by the very people we trusted. Kudos to you Cynthia for your courage and forbearance.

“Gray Rainy Day” begins with the natural sound of rain and morphs into melodious violin sequences. Chitko’s vocals resonate through the piece, paired with Fender bass, acoustic guitar and Rain FX. Memories are stirred by occasions but even as events happen both good and bad, life still goes on.

Evoking the spirit of freedom, “Dance with Me Mata Hari” spirals into being. The Tabla drum, acoustic guitar, Fender bass and Chitko’s signature emotive vocals take the listener on a magic carpet ride. The wild and sensuous essence of the legendary spy and lover coaxes you to cast all your inhibitions to the wind and let yourself go. The rhythm and folk sounds of this piece make you want to throw back your hair and just do it. Step out of the box and let your flag fly high.

Days Gone By Remembered is an album rich with memories and textured sound. The human condition is a blend of joy and pain and Cynthia Chitko purveys that well by using voice and instrumentation to craft an organic experience. She and her contributing artists have brought the shadows of the past alive and they are dancing. If you enjoy folk music with a focus on human elements, I recommend this album.

Metal Icon THOR Unleashes Pure Metal Vengeance With Help From A Host Of His Punk/Hard Rock Superstar Friends, Debuts New Video On Metal Hammer!

Features guests Henry Rollins, Fast Eddie Clarke, Cheetah Chrome, Jay Jay French, Joe "Shithead" Keithley and more!

Los Angeles, CA - After a year that saw a deluxe reissue of his career-launching 1983 album Unchained as well as seeing his life’s story retold in the documentary film I AM THOR, which has been picking up awards at such prestigious film festivals as Slamdance and Fantasia Fest, metal legend Jon Mikl THOR is capping off one of the biggest years of his career with the release of his newest studio album Metal Avenger on October 30! Joining the metal savior on this epic recording is a slew of luminaries from both the rock and punk worlds including powerhouse vocalist Henry Rollins, Motörhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke, Dead Boy Cheetah Chrome, Twister Sister axeman Jay Jay French, Christian Death guitarist Rikk Agnew, D.O.A.’s own Joey Shithead plus Ritchy Stotts of Plasmatics, Betsy Bitch and many others! The album will be available on both CD as well as a limited edition “blood red” vinyl pressing courtesy of Deadline Music!

“This is my most ambitious and best album in the history of my career,” THOR states boldly. Reteaming with producers Bruce Duff (Twisted Roots) and Frank Meyer (Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs), the group began writing new material and “came up with the concept of the ‘Metal Avenger’ whereby each song represents THOR’s quest to overcome the overlords of the planet Psykon and free the slaves on the master ship. There is adventure, intrigue and love in the lyrics and story. But most of all there is strength in the music. These songs are HEAVY yet melodic.” Recording took place at Kitten Robot studios with engineer Paul Roessler (The Screamers, 45 Grave) behind the board. Speaking of his guest performers, THOR offers, “I was very fortunate to perform with these incredible musicians who are each superhero characters in their own right. With my Comrades of Metal, I feel more powerful than ever!”

Check out the world premiere of the “Metal Avenger” video at Metal Hammer starting Friday!

Catch THOR perform live along with screenings of his documentary at these following locations:

Nov 16 - Chicago, IL - Reggie Rock Club
Nov 18 - Detroit, MI - Small’s Bar
Nov 20 - Philadelphia, PA - PhillyMOCA
Nov 22 - Brooklyn, NY - Saint Vitus Bar

THOR originated in the early ‘70s with body building champion and former Mr. USA Jon Mikl Thor, and quickly gained a devout following thanks in part to the band’s elaborate and supremely entertaining live shows, which frequently featured Jon performing not just outstanding anthems of metal but also astounding feats of strength - bending steel bars with his teeth and exploding water bottles with his lungs! Jon would go on to appear on the Merv Griffin Show, which led to the licensing deal with RCA in late 1976 and the release of their debut album Keep The Dogs Away the following year. But it wasn’t until the group’s 1984 EP Unchained and the follow-up full-length album, Only The Strong, that Jon Mikl & Co. really began to flex their muscles. Those releases contained the now classic songs such as “Lightning Strikes,” “Anger,” “Let The Blood Run Red” and “Thunder On The Tundra,” which earned the band a truly international following. Through the years that following has grown and solidified as new generations of classic metal heads discover the awesome power of the mighty THOR!

Aks And Shabz Review

Aks & Shabz have come a long way since their shared love for music first saw them lay down self-produced bedroom recordings several years ago. Their growing confidence and fanbase has seen their tracks not only getting support in London and the UK but further afield too. Having played festivals in Amsterdam and Dubai, the pair have a taste for performing internationally, and are driven by a need for widening their net even further.

The boys cite the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac and Jay Z as major influences and their brazen mix of hip hop and grime makes them a really exciting band to watch out for.
The pair have released their latest offering ‘ In Love With The Struggle’ earlier this year and it is an absolute triumph. Catchy but intelligent, this track charts the struggles the duo have encountered through their lives and how musical has rescued them from a life of gang violence and poverty.

Proud Honey Single Review

Proud Honey are a bunch of raucous upstarts from Scotland with bags of talent. Taking influence from classic rock bands such The Stone Roses, The Verve and Primal Scream, Proud Honey are taking conventional genres and putting their own distinct stamp on it.

The band are uplifting, fun and energetic both live and even once commandeered the radio at a supermarket to promote their own music.

And October sees their latest release, the single ‘Weekend Millionaire’. Influenced by a credit card fuelled stag do on which the band members went out on the town and spent ‘ridiculous amounts of money we didn’t have’, the song tells the tale of the high life which comes back to earth with a bang once reality kicks back in. Energetic and full of fun, it’s a track which deserves to launch Proud Honey to a new level in the industry.

‘Weekend Millionaire’ is out October 17th.

Groundbreaking Percussionist From Electronic Pioneers KRAFTWERK Releases Anthology Of Recent Works!

Los Angeles, CA - As the electronic percussionist during Kraftwerk’s peak of creativity, Wolfgang Flür’s place among the pioneers of modern music is assured. Kraftwerk’s computerized rhythms and deceptively simple beats, which produced such classics as “Autobahn,” “Showroom Dummies,” “Trans-Europe Express,” and “The Model,” made them one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. But Flür’s influence extends even beyond his creative musical talents to include his technological gifts as exemplified by his co-inventing of the first ever electronic drum pad, alongside Kraftwerk founder Florian Schneider, which Flür put to good use both in Kraftwerk’s stage show as well as studio recordings. Now, a new collection of Flür’s solo recordings from the last decade is about to see release in the US on Cleopatra Records October 30.

The collection, entitled Eloquence, kicks off with the highly autobiographical track “I Was A Robot,” which hit #6 on the German club charts upon its initial release in 2004. Immediately following is a stunning quasi-sequel to the Kraftwerk classic “The Model” called “Cover Girl.” In contrast to the cold, calculating compositions of his former band, Flür’s solo work is densely layered and veers more toward the warmth of house music with the catchiness of techno. This collection also features a number of prominent guest producers including Nitzer Ebb’s Bon Harris and Meat Beat Manifesto’s Jack Dangers as well as Pizzicato Five vocalist Nomiya Maki. Kraftwerk fans and anyone looking for some superbly crafted electronic music will not want to miss this exciting release.

Instrumental New Age Review: Anne Trenning-The Sunflower Waltz

Release Date: October 9, 2015
Label: Shadetree Records

Anne Trenning greets us with her fourth album, The Sunflower Waltz. This album focuses on solo piano workings and is comprised of ten original compositions and six re-imagined pieces. All of the songs are played on the spectacular Shigeru Kawai piano, each note presented in clear and crisp fashion, tempting the listener with each keystroke.

The first piece on the album is “Max’s Birthday.” Floating and light with all the potential a new year of life can bring, this track frolics and dances to the music of life in all of its mysteries. A puppy racing through the lawn, a young boy chasing after him with laughter trailing in the wind. The gentle imagining of this piece invokes musical nuance that carries through the entire album.

“In the Gloaming Light” is the eighth track on the album. It is a walk through a sea of memories, a bittersweet blend of nostalgia, longing and regrets. A collection of photographs under the bed from an era gone by, this piece resurrects the voices of the past. Note after note, a composition emerges of lives lived and bonds forged to last forever.

“The Sunflower Waltz” is the title track to the album and one that is lush and filled with joy. The whimsical dance of each note summons the child in all of us, freely dancing in a field of sunflowers. The sun shines down on us as we spin and let the vast blue sky envelope us. Such a happy tune and one of my favorites on the album.

“A Prayer for the World” is the last piece on the album. Tender melodies comprise this composition. Each stroke of the keys is a prayer for humanity in all of our foibles and shiny imperfections. It is the air we breathe, the decisions we make both good and less stellar. Each twisting and turning chapter of the song inches us closer toward unity with our maker.

Anne Trenning is a talented artist and composer. Her work with the solo piano in The Sunflower Waltz is mesmerizing and a soothing experience that I highly recommend. Twisting melodies that embroil you in their simple grace, each of the sixteen tracks takes you on a journey outside of yourself. A great listen.

Heavy Metal Review: Iron Maiden-Book of Souls

Release Date: September 4, 2015
Label: BMG Recorded Music

Iron Maiden is one of heavy metal’s most legendary bands, who rose to fame and dominated the charts during the 1980s. This is one of those cases where if you do not know who they are, you must have been living under a rock for the past few decades. Formed in London in 1975, the current incarnation of the band consists of Bruce Dickinson (lead vocals, piano), Dave Murray (guitar), Adrian Smith (guitar), Janick Gers (guitar), Steve Harris (bass, keyboards), and Nicko McBrain (drums).

The Book of Souls is their sixteenth studio album, and their first since 2010’s The Final Frontier.  This eleven song double album clocks in at just over ninety minutes, and it is ninety minutes well spent.  While hitting on themes of mortality, the soul, death, and sorrow, The Book of Souls is one wild ride, leading to an unforgettable and incredible finale.

“If Eternity Should Fail” is an all-around fantastic opener. First, there is the thrilling atmosphere in the beginning and, second, are the stellar vocals that bring everything to the next level. The music and vocals fit so well together that I would never want to separate them. There is also a great solo section a bit after the halfway point for good measure. Overall, it is a grand and mythic song musically, vocally, and lyrically. It is the perfect song to open the album, because if you like it, then I would be astonished if you did not like the rest. Living up to its name, “Speed of Light” is a hard-hitting rocker that comes out soaring like a comet through the night sky. There is great energy in the vocal performance, but the guitar work steals the show on this one.

“The Great Unknown” opens with a killer base line and astounds with its otherworldly sound. The vocals reach new heights that the previous songs did not, and the guitar solo around the five minute mark absolutely tears things it up. A towering beast of a song, “The Red and the Black” grabs you by the hair with its delicious opening riff, and then continues to groove right along. It is a fairly long, clocking in at just over thirteen and a half minutes, and though it does an adequate job of not wearing out its welcome, I was waiting for it to end by the eleven minute mark. Pulsating with energy, “When the River Runs Deep” is a fast paced, head-banging tune. “The Book of Souls” starts off mellow with an acoustic opening, before the whole band drops in to turn things up to eleven. The song has a great flow, leading to the most memorable riff on the album, making for a fantastic end to the first album.

Starting off the second album in glorious fashion, “Death or Glory” is a high tempo track packed with unrelenting energy. It is a ripping and roaring song that absolutely soars, and has a great eighties throwback vibe to its sound with its riffs and melodies, making for a rock solid metal tune. The jarring opening of “Shadows of the Valley” has a slightly sinister feel to it and it could be the theme song to a dark fantasy film. The music is nice and controlled metal during the instrumental.

“Tears of a Clown” is an interesting song, because it is a bit of a heavy metal lament. As you can tell by the title, the lyrics are sad and depressing. There is a nice guitar solo to lift the spirts up, as much as it can on a song like this. “The Man of Sorrows” is a haunting song with plenty of emotion. I am also thinking that it possibly makes “Tears of a Clown” a tad redundant. “Empire of the Clouds” is the closers of all closers, a truly epic and stunning song. There is the beautiful piano opening, an album highlight for sure, that moves seamlessly into metal territory with some nice harmonies and killer guitar parts.  It is by far the album’s longest song, but it never wears out its welcome.

It is safe to say that Iron Maiden has knocked it out of the park with The Book of Souls, and it made it over the fence with plenty of room to spare.  Despite a few minor glitches, I have found that this album has grown on me with each listen. This album is a must for Iron Maiden fans. The Book of Souls is a 21st century metal masterpiece.

Captain Beefheart "Live in Cowtown, Kansas City 22nd April 1974" Rare Radio Broadcast Now Available!

London, UK – In their ongoing series of rare concert recordings, Gonzo Multimedia just released on CD Captain Beefeart “Live in Cowtown, Kansas City 22nd April 1974.” Don Van Vliet (born Don Glen Vliet; January 15, 1941 – December 17, 2010) was an American musician, singer-songwriter, artist and poet known by the stage name Captain Beefheart. His musical work was conducted with a rotating ensemble of musicians called the Magic Band (1965–1982), with whom he recorded 13 studio albums. Noted for his powerful singing voice with its wide range, Van Vliet also played the harmonica, saxophone and numerous other wind instruments. His music blended rock, blues and psychedelia with avant-garde and contemporary experimental composition. Beefheart was also known for exercising an almost dictatorial control over his supporting musicians, and for often constructing myths about his life.

During his teen years in Lancaster, California, Van Vliet developed an eclectic musical taste and formed friendship with Frank Zappa, with whom he sporadically collaborated. He began performing with his Captain Beefheart persona in 1964 and joined the original Magic Band line-up, initiated by Alexis Snouffer, in 1965. The group drew attention with their cover of Bo Diddley's “Diddy Wah Diddy”, which became a regional hit. It was followed by their acclaimed debut album 'Safe As Milk', released in 1967 on Buddah Records. After being dropped by two consecutive record labels, they signed to Zappa's Straight Records. As producer, Zappa granted Beefheart unrestrained artistic freedom in making 1969's 'Trout Mask Replica', which ranked 58th in Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 1974, frustrated by lack of commercial success, he released two albums of more conventional rock music that were critically panned; this move, combined with not having been paid for a European tour, and years of enduring Beefheart's strict discipline, led the entire band to quit. Beefheart eventually formed a new Magic Band with a group of younger musicians and regained contemporary approval through three final albums: 'Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)' (1978), 'Doc At The Radar Station' (1980) and 'Ice Cream For Crow' (1982).

Van Vliet has been described as “...one of modern music's true innovators” with “...a singular body of work virtually unrivaled in its daring and fluid creativity.” Although he achieved little commercial or mainstream critical success, he sustained a cult following as a 'highly significant' and 'incalculable' influence on an array of New Wave, punk, post-punk, experimental and alternative rock musicians. Known for his enigmatic personality and relationship with the public, Van Vliet made few public appearances after his retirement from music (and from his Beefheart persona) in 1982. He pursued a career in art, an interest that originated in his childhood talent for sculpture, and a venture that proved to be his most financially secure. His expressionist paintings and drawings command high prices, and have been exhibited in art galleries and museums across the world. Van Vliet died in 2010, having suffered from multiple sclerosis for many years.

Isis magazine describes this recording of Captain Beefheart live in Kansas City in 1974: “There are very few truly iconoclastic figures in the history of popular music since the mid 20th century, but Don Van Vliet (1941-2010), aka Captain Beefheart, is certainly one of them. By the time of this April 1974 broadcast, Captain Beefheart - and the 29th incarnation in a long line of ever-mutating Magic Bands - had reverted to more traditionally-structured compositions, to the chagrin of some fans. The touring band included some highly revered players including reedsman Del Simmons, who had previously played with Charlie Parker, guitarists Dean Smith and Fuzzy Fuscaldo (recently with Curtis Mayfield), bassist Paul Uhrig from Bobbie Gentry’s group, and drummer Ty Grimes, fresh from Rick Nelson’s acclaimed Stone Canyon Band. Caught live in Kansas City, Beefheart was amidst an extensive US (and subsequent European) tour promoting his eighth album, 'Unconditionally Guaranteed'. The often truculent Beefheart is in an unusually upbeat mood throughout.”
