Bay Area Songstress Drea. M Releases New Video, "Timebomb," About Personal Freedom and Empowerment

San Francisco – Drea. M commands the heart to listen. Soulful grit, haunting vocals, and mesmerizing live performances make this Bay Area songstress a must-hear sonic treat. With gutsy, raw emotion at the core of her songs, Drea. M does not compromise on the other elements of songwriting. Her lyrics are sophisticated, provocative, and expressed in unique cadences and layers, creating an unusual sonic quality, both edgy and refined. From multi-instrumental acoustic arrangements on her first album, Surrender (released under the name “Drea Muldavin”), to the more recent incorporation of electronic, orchestral, big-sound beats (such as her “Timebomb” single), Drea. M's style is ever-expanding, teasing her music into new realms. No matter the direction her songs take, what continues to drive her music is a haunting, atmospheric, and intricately textured sound, and an unwavering honesty about what it means to be profoundly alive. Drea. M has recently filmed a new video in support of her latest single, “Timebomb.”

Says Drea. M, “The 'Timebomb' video is about finding personal freedom and empowerment by breaking free of the ways we hold ourselves back. It’s about surfing emotional edges in spite of that pit in the stomach, and then jumping... I wrote the song at a time when I felt a sense of 'now or never,' a sense of great urgency, and I immediately conceptualized the shibari rope work because I wanted to exemplify being held, bound, and suspended in time, right at that moment when we want nothing more than to be free of all that has held us back for so long. In that sense, both the song and the video are about that wild, igniting energy that contains itself just short of explosion, and how we can find empowerment and clarity -- even moments of ecstasy -- in that restraint.”

“Drea. M's voice captures your ear with a familiar, soft lushness. You immediately trust its honesty. In the video for her song, 'Timebomb,' we see her bite her teeth into the constricting rope that binds her, an image that perfectly complements the sensuality of the song. Drea.M's voice carries secrets - the ones you typically only hear whispered - and she shares them with full-throated abandon without ever losing her mysterious edge.” - Zaron Burnett III, Sex & Culture writer for Playboy.com

Watch Drea. M's “Timebomb” video here:

After a very successful Indiegogo campaign, Drea. M shot the video in the course of two full nights at American Steel Studios in Oakland. The crew included LP Satsuki Murashige and Producer Dimitri Moore. Because she had a relatively short timeframe within which to shoot the video, the energy was intense and focused, and much like the concept behind the video, aspects of the performance were physically and psychologically challenging, pushing Drea. M to the edge of her comfort zone. She explains, “One example of this was when I chose to be tied up and suspended in order to sing in an upside-down, full-harness shibari rope suspension. While this shot enters the video for just a short period, a lot of time, communication, and safety awareness went into the preparation for this shot. The intensity of the moment -- when I began to sing while suspended upside-down, knowing I had very little time to capture the lines while in such a restrictive harness -- lent itself to the energy of the performance. It was a total rush for me...frightening, exciting, and liberating all at once.”

Drea. M will be releasing her new EP December 1st, and having the CD release at Awaken Café in Oakland, CA on Dec 3rd, 2015. Says Drea. M, “It is a true honor to be co-producing the album with David Earl -- an incredible composer, producer, and collaborator who understands where I am taking my sound and cherishes musical exploration. I am very excited about this new body of work! After the CD release in December, the plan is to do a Pacific Northwest tour, play some other cities across the country, and then do a European tour.”

In closing Drea. M says, “What I wish to convey to my fans through my music is what I try to keep in mind every day, as a mantra of sorts: never give up on yourself, especially when you are just about to, and always push your boundaries, especially when you most feel like hiding in the safety zone. My own journey with music and performance has been a long and winding trajectory, and the path is never paved ahead of time. Songwriting and performing one's innermost thoughts, fears, and desires is all about edge-surfing -- finding those emotional cliffs and staying there, and I believe we should live our lives on those edges as much as we can. Why? Because empathy is the most powerful tool we have, and what keeps us from engaging our empathy to the fullest is our fear of feeling intensely. Music that taps into the universality of emotion allows people to feel deeply, and to then move through the world with more awareness, compassion, and capacity for connection with others. That’s what music is ultimately about...connection.”

Hard Rock Review: Lynch Mob-Rebel

Release Date: August 21, 2015
Label: Frontiers

If you are not familiar with the hard rock band Lynch Mob, then it is time to get yourself acquainted. Formed in 1989 from the ashes of 80s metal band Dokken, Lynch Mob, after a few break-ups and numerous line-up changes, currently consists of George Lynch (guitar), Oni Logan (vocal), Jimmy D’Anda (drums), and Sean McNabb (bass). Rebel is their seventh album that show them to be in top form. The album features eleven songs of ripping and roaring hard rock that is sure to please fans and leaving wanting and waiting for more.

There is nothing like a great opener to jump start an album and “Automatic Fix” is such a song. Coming out like a lion’s roar, “Automatic Fix” is a great ode to rock music that is sure to have heads banging. Power and presence is something that makes for a great opener, and this one more than delivers. With an instrumental section that shines and soars, this song seems to have it all. The beginning of “Between Truth and A Lie” has a nice edge to it, but after that it is an average rock song. Nothing really stands out or leaves much of an impression, making for skippable filler.

Getting the album going back in the right direction, “Testify” thrills with its thundering opening. It is a slow and heavy rock song, whose methodical nature gives off an intense atmosphere. What is a rock album without a nice jolt of rage? Providing that rage is “Sanctuary,” a gritty, hard rocking tune dripping with social and political commentary, as the lyrics vent about the state of the modern world. “Pine Tree Avenue” is interesting song, with its funky groove and shifts in tempo. For many it might be one of those songs that takes a while to get into, because it has grown on me with each listen.

Another funky rock song, “Jelly Roll” is a place where the guitar really shines. The caustic opening of “Dirty Money” fits nicely with its politically charged lyrics. Though not quite as rage-filled as “Sanctuary,” “Dirty Money” has plenty of righteous anger for its targets. Announcing its presence with a booming opening, “The Hollow Queen” is an atmospheric song with a catchy chorus that demands to be shouted out at the top of your lungs.

“The Ledge” starts off with a slow, brooding opening that seamlessly morphs into a lighter, softer sound.  It is an emotional song that puts Logan’s vocals at center stage, where they truly steal the show here.

“Kingdom of Slaves” is one hard-hitting rock song, with controlled and commanding musical and vocal performances. Capping the album off is “War,” a fantastic song with sweet rhythm and flow that is dominated by a stunning and unpredictable guitar solo.

Lynch Mob’s Rebel is rock solid album. It stands as another testament to the dynamic duo of George Lynch and Oni Logan. Their chemistry is undeniable and it really shines through in their music. If you are looking for some quality hard rock, then Lynch Mob’s Rebel is just what the doctor ordered.

Instrumental New Age Review: Bob Ardern-Eight Winds

Release Date: November 2015
Label: Indie

Hailing from the shores of Nova Scotia, Bob Ardern brings us a new masterpiece with his newest album Eight Winds. Twelve original compositions including contributions from David Findlay and Duncan Woodcock cover the bases from Classical, New Age, Celtic and light hearted Jazz. This album is a wonderful example of Arden’s finger style playing and offers the listener a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the everyday world.

“Zephyr” is the first track on the album, bringing the listener into the captivating realm of springy playing and intricate movements. Bobbing along the water, you watch the sea hit the side of the boat and hold your head high as you crest wave after wave. This is freedom. Every note. Every wave.

“Matilda’s Dance” is a peppy and frolicking piece that invokes a child at play. Dressing up in too big dresses and shoes and dancing around the house with your father. Afternoon tea parties bumble alongside quirky melodic combinations that give loose tooth smiles and the carefree laugh of a child who knows her father’s love. This is the joy of family, of belonging. Picture the dance of a puppy as she figures out her feet, stomping and hopping over the carpet and stairs….the strumming guitar takes you there, every step of the way.

“Matushka” is a twisty and windy piece that caught my attention immediately. The guitar work is more intricate and I had to think about what was going on in the mind of the musician as he crafted this composition. Like a decorative top, this piece winds its way over street and sidewalk, taking you on a journey as rich as A Christmas Story and as full of mystery and intrigue as Stand By Me. This is the music of growing up and learning who you are. Sometimes it’s beautiful and others not so much, but with every twisting turn, you see another layer spinning out for the world to see-and the picture is marvelous if you stand still long enough to really listen.

Bob Ardern is a skilled guitarist and has picked some excellent contributing musicians for this album. Eight Winds is an experience that will take you skimming along the ocean, revisiting old memories of youth and even playing tea party as a child. Each song invokes an emotional response and a series of pictures that strum along with Arden’s guitar. Take a moment and listen. I think you’ll find a little of yourself peeking from inside…

New Age Music and The Grammys 2015

New York, NY-September 29, 2015-New Age Music continues to gather momentum with each passing year and the relevance of the music becomes clearer with Grammy Nominations.

According to Wikipedia it is used by listeners for yoga, massage, meditation, and reading as a method of stress management or to create a peaceful atmosphere in their home or other environments, and is associated with environmentalism and New Age spirituality.

That is a fair assessment of what this music can offer however there is much more to it. Avid listeners of this type of music can find so much more inside the music. It most certainly is a spiritual journey but one cannot put it in a box and tuck it away in the corner. Many elements and influences from all over the world converge to make this genre compelling. World, classical, electronic music and more find their way into this community. This in turn has the power to connect us all regardless of where we are from.

I think what stands out strongly within this genre is that every artist that records New Age music can put their own unique stamp on it. Many enlightened artisans will take the old and the new to formulate a refreshing sound.

This year there is a newcomer to the genre that has emerged, Russell Suereth. Listeners should take notice of this developing talent. Suereth’s album Spiritual Haven focuses on a spiritual journey that takes the listener to a place far away. Suereth played all the instruments and Tom Eaton of Will Ackerman’s Imaginary Road Studios did the final mastering.

Spiritual Haven was a bold step for an artist that came from the contemporary rock sector. It was the right direction for the artist to go as the album has made quite an impression. Suereth was able to cross over any barriers and create something special. From an idea, a seedling planted and then nurtured, the album took shape and matured into a beautiful group of tracks.

With this year’s Grammy Nominations right around the corner there is hope that this fine recording titled Spiritual Haven will be recognized for its contribution to the genre and listeners across the globe.

Dressed To Kill Drummer Ian Danter To Release Sophomore Album “Second Time Around”

London, UK - Ian Danter is an incredibly talented multi- instrumentalist and songwriter who released his debut album "Prove You Wrong” to great critical acclaim in 2013 – he is also very well known as a sports broadcaster on talkSPORT Radio in the UK. Ian also plays drums with the longest running KISS tribute band Dressed To Kill. His musical influences include Dio, Rush, Foo Fighters, Wildhearts, Cheap Trick, Jellyfish, Pantera, Journey and Aerosmith, to name a few. Now much to the excitement of Ian's fans worldwide, his sophomore album titled “Second Time Around” will be released on Cherry Red Records in September 25, 2015!

“Second Time Around” features 11 brand new songs all written performed and sung by Danter on his own – these were recorded during various sessions in Birmingham in 2014 & 2015 . This album gives Classic Rock a neat, modern twist – great hooks and catchy harmonies allied to strong, punchy performances and thoughtful, witty lyrics throughout covering themes of religion, money, relationships and fame-seeking

Says Ian, “The wonderful thing about this album for me is how truly unexpected it was.

“You see, the huge confidence I gained from my debut album 'Prove You Wrong' suddenly reawakened my songwriting instincts - and here we are 2 years later with all these really really strong new tunes. Not only that, but also this new-found confidence led me to play and sing the whole lot on 'Second Time Around'. I knew I could do everything this time - and I did!

“This, in my opinion, is the album that some of my favourite Classic Rock bands SHOULD be bringing out nowadays rather than the boring, one-paced efforts they're churning out instead. You got riffs, melodies, harmonies and more hooks than a butcher's shop meat rack here! I'm so so proud of it.”

“The eleven songs…are explosive bolts, individual landscapes of colour and they represent a revival of the styles and spirit of classic rock” – Metaltalk.net

Track Listing:
1. IF MY TRUTH IS A LIE
2. MR POISON
3. CHINESE WHISPERS
4. LOVE FATIGUE
5. SECOND TIME AROUND
6. WE BELIEVED
7. IT ALL COMES BACK TO ROCK
8. SIMPLE AS THAT
9. I DIDN’T GET WHERE I AM TODAY
10. I LOVE YOU MORE
11. BETTER OFF OUT OF IT (THAN WORSE OFF DEAD)

New Age Instrumental/Classical Review: Angelo Râpan-Songs of Leaving

Release Date: August 2105
Label: Indie

Angelo Râpan has created a beautifully composed album titled Songs of Leaving. My introduction to this finely crafted recording was the track “Remember” which was featured on our Rate The Tracks site.

I was moved by this music, it hit me square in the heart. I thought about the title of the album then the tone and atmosphere of every track. If you listen carefully, the pace of each song can relate to something or someone leaving. Whether it be walking at a brisk pace or slowly turning back with a tear in one’s eye, or just cruising down a highway with a view of the coast …There is a song for each mood and place in time.

Angelo transfers his heart and soul through his incredibly talented fingers then creates music with the piano that is simply amazing. For the most part it is just the piano however you will hear a few different instruments peppered here and there such as the violin which can be an excellent companion of the piano. You will hear new age instrumental and classical influences coming through at every turn, and it is a wonderful mixture of sound and textures.

Once again I find myself at a loss to single out any one track that stands out above the rest as the entire album is superb from start to finish. The reason I say this is because each track seamlessly flows into the next. What this artist accomplishes within 8 tracks is like a moving musical storybook. Even though each one is different it ties into the next like a patchwork quilt with many colors and distinct purpose.

If you are in the mood for some soothing instrumental music to take the edge off and have the ability to really take stock of your inner most feelings and thoughts, Songs of Leaving will be the light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps what it all means is that you can leave whatever it is that is preoccupying you behind and totally immerse yourself in this music. Whatever meaning you find in this music will certainly take you in a positive direction. It is worth several listens and I would be willing to bet will become one of your favorite instrumental albums to relax to this year.

Indie Rock Superstars Salute The Thin White Duke With All New Interpretations Of David Bowie’s Best!

Features performances by Kittie, Dum Dum Girls, Electric Six, Rogue Wave, Heartless Bastards, The Muffs and more!

Los Angeles, CA - David Bowie’s career has been defined by his unique ability to make artistically complex and challenging music sound like mainstream pop…ok, maybe pop music from an entirely different planet, but pop music all the same. As a result, the definition of rock music has expanded; Bowie never went mainstream, the mainstream always came to him. For these reasons and more, he is one of the most deeply revered and profoundly influential artists in modern rock. And nowhere can Bowie’s influence be felt more than in the world of indie rock, where bands and artists have taken Bowie’s fiercely independent streak, commitment to artistic integrity, and a diverse array of musical styles into the 21st century and beyond. Now, a truly impressive gathering of indie and modern rockers have gathered to pay tribute to the man with A Salute To The Thin White Duke - The Songs Of David Bowie to be released on both CD & vinyl as well as mp3s on October 2 courtesy of Cleopatra Records.

Among the participants is the all-girl alt metal Canadian quartet Kittie who expressed a sentiment shared by many of the artists here, “We are so excited to be able to contribute to this amazing tribute album. ‘Space Oddity’ is arguably one of David Bowie's most well known songs so we put all of our efforts into doing all of its intricacies justice, while still retaining our signature, heavy sound.’ Meanwhile, Detroit’s own Electric Six made no bones about their preferred Bowie era, saying “We had to do ‘80s Bowie because frankly, we couldn't trust the earlier Bowie. And the ‘90s Bowie is, well…So ‘80s Bowie was the one for us, and ‘Blue Jean’ was just sitting there waiting for us to club the shit out of it, and, man, did we club it!” Similarly, Zach from Rogue Wave had this to say of “Modern Love,” the song that opens the album, “My favorite Bowie song from his tailored suit era. All that uptempo beat and those chugging horns couldn't hide the sadness of what it means to come down to earth.”

Jared Artaud from The Vacant Lots succinctly expressed the challenges of approaching Bowie’s music, “It’s hard to touch Bowie. He’s an architect. What he’s done, you can’t make it better, so we wanted to reconceptualize it & approach the song from another point of view.” And The Tulips offer this entirely accurate description, “Covering a Bowie tune was like jumping into a cab and realizing there's a tiger sitting shotgun, and no one says a word.” A wild ride indeed! And fans of Bowie will find this collection of covers equally as thrilling!

Track List
1. Modern Love - Rogue Wave
2. John, I’m Only Dancing - Jesca Hoop

Grammy and Emmy Award Winning Multi-Platinum Producer Narada Michael Walden To Release New Full Length Album EVOLUTION on Tarpan Records

San Rafael, CA - Tarpan Records is pleased to announce the international release of EVOLUTION the upcoming full-length album by Narada Michael Walden releasing on October 30th 2015. The albums’ first single, Billionaire On Soul Street, which was released on August 14th, 2015 and the forthcoming album represent a change of direction for Narada, one that brings him back to his roots in Dance and Club Music, Funk and Soul. The first single was, and full-length album will be released on Narada’s own imprint, Tarpan Records.

Narada Michael Walden has produced many household names including: Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Stacy Lattisaw, Steve Winwood, Ray Charles, Sister Sledge, Patti Austin, Gladys Knight, Rev Al Green, Barbra Streisand, Lionel Ritchie, Elton John, Sting, Carlos Santana, Shanice Wilson, Tevin Campbell, Lisa Fischer, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones, Wynonna Judd and The Temptations. He was awarded Grammys for Producer of the Year in 1988, Album of the Year for the movie soundtrack The Bodyguard in 1993 and the R&B Song of the Year in 1985 for Aretha Franklin's Freeway of Love. Billboard Magazine also named him one of the “Top Ten Producers with the Most Number One Hits”.

As impressive a production and songwriting resume as Narada Michael Walden has assembled over the past forty years, he has earned equal acclaim as a recording and performing artist in his own right. Beginning as a drummer with the pioneering Mahavishnu John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra (following Billy Cobham at 20 years old), Narada also toured with Jeff Beck, Tommy Bolin, and Weather Report. With twelve acclaimed solo albums of his own which produced Dance Hits such as I Don’t Want Nobody Else to Dance With You, I Shoulda Loved Ya, Divine Emotions, Gimme Gimme Gimme and Tonight I'm Alright along the way, he has achieved greatness in a wide range of sonic arenas. Walden’s music includes groundbreaking soundtrack work on such blockbuster films as The Bodyguard, Free Willy, Beverly Hills Cops II, 9 ½ Weeks and Stuart Little including Gladys Knight’s License to Kill for the James Bond Film, Jefferson Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now for Mannequin to the EMMY-winning One Moment In Time, the theme to the 1988 Olympic Games.

In early February 2012, Narada Michael Walden returned from a well received 10 day stint of shows at the Blue Note in Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan to perform at the White House in an all-star band for President Obama’s “Red, White and Blues” Concert with legends B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Trombone Shorty, Booker T Jones and more.

Narada enlisted some amazing musicians and performers for his band on EVOLUTION including: Nikita Germaine (Train, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, and Patty Austin) on Vocals, Frank Martin (Angela Bofil, John Handy Band, Tuck & Patti, Jose’ Neto, Airto & Flora, Sting & Trudie’s Rainforest Band) on Keyboards, Angeline Saris (Gretchen Menn, Zepperella) on Bass and Vocals, Matthew Charles Heulitt (Zigaboo Modaliste) on Guitars.

Narada explains about the album’s first single: “This album EVOLUTION means the world to me because it reflects my personal feeling of spirituality and that feeling renewed for life by having my children Kelly and Kaylah in my life and my wife Katie. Having children now at this time in my life really has touched my heart to feel like WOW! Look how lucky and how blessed I am by God. I used this slogan, this sentence that I got from Kimrea who works at my Tarpan Studios. Cause’ I feel so good like a Billionaire on Soul Street. “EVOLUTION is a strong statement from Narada, inspired by the “retro” sound that is so prevalent on the radio and in clubs today. The album features mostly original material and two covers; Freedom by Richie Havens and Long and Winding Road by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Tarpan Records will release Narada Michael Walden’s new album EVOLUTION internationally in October of 2015 with help from distribution and marketing powerhouse Independent Distribution Collective. This new album is a Dance masterpiece, with many flavors of Narada’s vast history mixed in.

His label, Tarpan Records is a home to both established and amazing up-and-coming artists as well. Tarpan Records specializes in artist development, full service project management, promotion, and distribution. Initially focused on Narada’s releases, the plan is to apply this business model to up and coming and established recording artists in the years to come.

Narada Michael Walden and his all-star band will perform a series of shows across the USA in the next few months in support of the release of EVOLUTION.

Nashville, TN - Since leaving home in 1961 to pursue a career in music, T.G. Sheppard has done it all. He scored a job as a promotions executive for RCA Records, where he became friends with Elvis Presley who believed in his talent so much that he gave him his first tour bus, topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart an astonishing 21 times, and left an everlasting mark on Country music. Over the years, the smooth singer/songwriter has made a lot of impressive friends, which inspired the vision for his upcoming album, Legendary Friends & Country Duets, which is set for release on Oct. 30 via Cleopatra Records. On the upcoming project, TG collaborates with some of the most influential artists of all-time and those that he can actually call his personal friends.

“In my 40 years of recording music, this album has to be my most favorite I've ever recorded,” says T.G. Sheppard. “I'm very honored that so many of my personal friends came in to sing, with no questions asked, and gave their all.”

Listeners will be taken on a journey, with songs that hit the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Standout tracks on the album include the fun, “It’s A Man Thing” which features late country icon George Jones, the relaxing sing-along, “Song Man” with Grammy®winner Merle Haggard, and the inspiring, “In Texas” with country outlaw Willie Nelson. Legendary Friends & Country Duets will bring traditional country music back to the forefront, as the style currently makes a demanding comeback. With the remarkable list of guests on the album, Legendary Friends & Country Duets is a must-have for all music fans to remind them what made country music great.

“As a record company working multiple projects in all genres, it is always special to find an artist and project like what T.G. Sheppard has brought to Cleopatra Records,” says Tim Yasui, VP/GM of Cleopatra Records. “T.G. is loved within the Country music community and this project proves that his fanbase is much more than just the country music fans - his fellow artists love him, too! Albums like this come once in a lifetime and Cleopatra Records is very proud to be involved in this iconic recording.”

Sheppard has already begun promoting the album, with several upcoming appearances already scheduled. Airing on September 13-14, NBC’s “Open House” will take viewers inside the stylish Nashville home of Sheppard and his wife, singer/songwriter Kelly Lang. The show is described as the ultimate insiders’ guide to real estate and home design. "Songs For The Dead", The Brand New Album From Norwegian Industrial / Alternative-Rock Band Magenta, To Be Released October 16th On Cleopatra Records!

Los Angeles, CA - Norwegian Industrial /Alternative-Rock band, Magenta will unleash their long awaited new album “Songs For The Dead”, a true masterpiece of dark & savage beauty. Leading off the campaign for the album will be an official audio-video for the album’s first single “Ghost”, produced by Al Jorgenson of Ministry and featuring synths by Stephan Groth of Apoptygma Berzerk.

Magenta “Ghost" (Official Audio/Video)

Magenta was formed by Vilde Lockert Odden and Anders Odden in 1995. They have always taken inspiration from the wide range of music they like and describe their work as a soundtrack to a movie you have to create in your head.

Anders Odden is well known in the international metal scene as guitarist for Norwegian black metal legends, Satyricon. His guitar prowness has also served well for Cadaver, Apoptygma Berzerk and Celtic Frost to name a few. But unlike any of these, Magenta is his main musical outlet as a composer/writer.

"Songs For The Dead" was borne through deep tragedy. The Magenta family had been invited to stay at Ministry leader, Al Jourgensen’s 13th Planet Studios compound during the Xmas of 2012. They arrived the same day that Ministry guitarist Mike Scaccia left after finishing some recording. Then shortly after, on December 22nd, news reached them that Mike passed away. Everyone at Al’s compound was overwhelmed with grief. To try to get somewhat back to normal in the midst of this, they all decided to record something. The Magentas daugther, Regine, had written a song called "Ghost" in the castle of Duke Hank Von Hell (ex-Turbonegro) the Xmas before. They recorded this track with Al's magic touch and the idea for the album dedicated to those who have past on, was born.

The album is like a requiem and is a new birth for Magenta. It is the first album Magenta have done that they feel represent them fully as the kind of musical entity they want. As Anders himself has said; "Magenta is my playground where I can be as diverse and melodic as I want to."

Sinfiction Single Review

Oxford based Sinfiction are turning heads with their own bespoke take on indie rock. Hailing from the same city as foals it is easy to see that they have had some influence on Sinfiction which is no bad thing.

Double A side ‘Painted Memories’ and ‘Ugly Baby’ is a raucous but luscious release with driving beats, jangly guitars and soaring vocals and pulsating bass lines. It is a seamless release if ever there was one and we are so excited to hear what else they have to offer.

The single shows us that this is a band with real momentum and panache, and a real love for simply making their music and making it loud.

Neil C Young – Single Review

Neil C Young is a dynamic guitarist with a definitive flair and passion for minimalism and jazz. His tracks reflect a mastery and keen interest in the intricate workings of the guitar which Neil seems to be more than competent with.
The single ‘Bolo’ from his album ‘Encemble’ is a fantastic, light and jazzy, with an air of sophistication better suited to a dim lit New York jazz club than on national radio. It is something precious in a way, like a best kept secret you don’t want anything to know about.
‘Bolo’ sets the tone for the rest of the album and it is flawless in its conception and its execution. Sonically and melodically it is a faultless and we cannot wait to see what else Neil has to offer.

The Lightness Of Being Review

With an already stellar EP under their belts entitled ‘Directions’ The Lightness of Being have kept
the theme of propulsion and have dropped their fantastic second EP ‘Movements.’
Movements is a dark and brooding EP for fans of Queens of The Stone Age and Audio Slave. It is unrelenting in its performance and completely genius in its conception and execution.  Opening track ‘Disappearing Act’ sets the tone for the rest of the EP with driving guitars, pulsing drums and raucous bass lines. Both ‘Unknown’ and ‘Cat Eyes’ build on the ideas explored in ‘Disappearing Acts’ to create a brilliant offering with elements of rock metal and grunge interspersed within.

The Movements EP is out now.

New Age Music Review: Peter Calandra-First Light

Release Date: 09/21/2015
Label: Indie

Pete Calandra’s fifth studio release First Light takes the human condition, the beauty of nature and our inner spirit as sentient beings and turns it into instrumental perfection. The official release date is two days prior to the beginning of the Fall Equinox on September 23rd. I believe there is a connection there based on the type of music this is and the subject matter that evolves around it. Calandara uses various layers of keyboards then adds cello, oboe, violin and more to make it an orchestrated pathway to the heavens.

The instrumentation and soft voices that gather together for each composition are smooth and relaxing journeys. I felt as if this music could have a twofold purpose. My first impression was for the pure enjoyment of the listening experience and then secondly and perhaps more profoundly, as a meditative guide to awaken your inner most self. This would bring with it good thoughts and positive energy, the kind of energy that heals and makes the heart smile.

I believe the new age genre holds many gifts for the listener to discover, if of course your mind, body and spirit are an open book.

The title track “First Light” is very fitting to the atmosphere and meaning of the recording and most obviously to the CD cover. The track is one of the outstanding compositions on the album and was featured on our RateThe Tracks site as well. This is a gorgeously picturesque track that grabbed my attention immediately and made the light of a new day a reality. That is what good music is supposed to do, particularly instrumental music of this ilk. It really should paint a picture in your mind’s eye and it most certainly does in this case.

“Valley of Two Lakes” connects you to nature…Mother Earth, which equals synchronicity of the soul with the planet in my mindset. It starts off very inviting and gentle with a blend of keyboards then changes and gives a path to a walk in a Japanese garden with plants, sounds and smells of nature putting you into a trance. I thought of my visits to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco many years ago while absorbing all the sounds into my consciousness.

I can see how this artist has been in demand to create soundtracks for other media outlets besides the general listening public. His multitude of talents and innate perception of what needs to be heard and the entire creative process is a truly a gift.

More beauty and the meaning of life will abound once again with “Circle The Time.” What is the relevance of time after all? Did not humans create that measure of life? We are specks of dust in a vast universe and the importance of it belongs to each individual but is there not a circle, a continuity of life itself that spins around on this earth? The track made me think of all this and ushered in the rest of the album with a stunning grace and beauty that was most appreciated by these ears.

First Light is a musical flight of color and sound that is passionate and wondrous. It will delight the auditory senses and give your surroundings a different meaning while listening. Once again as always, this is up to each individual listener. I can only relate to what the music does for me and how it communicates to me personally and hopefully other listeners will have the same rewarding experience. It was a nice feeling to have throughout the run of this album and I would recommend putting it on after a tough day at the office.

Progressive Rock Review: The Aaron Clift Experiment-Outer Light Inner Darkness

Release Date: 18th September 2015
Label:  Aaron Clift Productions
Website

I previously reviewed The Aaron Clift Experiment debut album, Lonely Hills, on its release in 2012 and now, 3 years further down the line comes the follow-up album by the band, Outer Light Inner Darkness. The first album was very good and received a 4.5/5 and it is interesting to see where the Aaron Clift Experiment has moved to since that point.

The band is a 4 piece, initially formed in 2012 by Aaron Clift (vocals, keyboards) along with Jim Ragland (guitars), Joe Green (bass) and Joe Resnick (drums), but there have been several changes since the release of Lonely Hills. Jim Ragland was first to leave, being replaced by Danny Brymer, who in turn left in 2013 to be replaced by the current guitarist, Eric Gutierrez. More movement saw the bass player, Joe Green leave and in his stead arrived Devin North earlier this year.

Outer Light Inner Darkness is a 10 track album, if you include the 2 bonus tracks, running for just over 63 minutes. The shortest track is ”Your Arms Hold Them to The Dark (acoustic version)” at 3:40 minutes and the 3 part suite, “Moonscape” incorporating “The Frontline,” “Fool’s Mate” and “Outer Light Inner Darkness” at 12:04 minutes is the longest.

Opening proceedings for Outer Light Inner Darkness is the track, “Kissed By The Sun” (7:40) which certainly grabs the listener by the ears with both guitar, then violin, demanding attention. The song is then underpinned by the bass and drums of Devin and Joe, prior to the suave, sophisticated vocals of Aaron putting in an appearance. Although going through the initial fiery intro sequence, then coming down a few rungs, this track continues to demand the attention of the listener. Moving from bass to piano, to guitar led passages, this is a classy opening track to the album. The guitar of Eric has a harder edge than appeared on the debut release.

There is a much more laid back style with track 2, “Locked” (5:22) and it quickly moves into a stylish jazzy feel before the tempo builds and heralds an excellent guitar passage. This powers the track along and then the soundscape lowers to the more laid back style of the start to escort the track out.

“Fragments of Sleep” (4:37) is a slightly more up-tempo style with a repetitive piano motif and a stunningly simple but powerful combination of the drum and bass engine-house. Aaron’s voice is always clear above the music and is the one consistent anchor in the proceedings. This is a more thoughtful track with a style change into the second half with strings/violin and great harmonizing/double-tracked vocals. A short a cappella section takes the track out and into the somber, almost sinister, piano intro of the next track, “Your Arms Hold Them To The Dark” (4:20). This has a slow, almost ponderous pace with the guitar riff crashing through then allowing more vocals, but the feeling of malevolence is always seemingly lurking just under the surface. Track 4 is a very different track to earlier material which highlights the confidence and maturity that the band has gained.

Next up is “Aiode, Goddess of Song” (5:57) which harks back to the almost abrasive style start to the opening track which then falls away as the vocals enter. From that point, the track moves effortlessly from the more upbeat driving passages to the softer melodic sections.

“The Last Oasis” (8:35) has a beautiful piano start which is then joined by a simple almost understated bass theme and a melancholic violin passage. This seems very classical in structure as the band slowly blends into the ethereal soundscape around the 3 minute mark. A tempo change speeds the track up, but it retains its classical styled appeal and seems to be instrumental with Eric’s guitar getting a long melodic workout. Well past the halfway point, the vocals, almost unexpectedly, make an appearance. Aaron’s crystal clear vocals add to the feeling of majesty, just before the rhythm engine bumps proceedings up a notch or two and drives this excellent track towards its finale.

“Moonscape” (12:05) is a simply superb track starting with just the voice of Aaron, military drumming and underpinned with a repeated keyboard motif. War sounds off in the distance paint a stunning aural landscape held by the simple guitar, keyboards and voice. The guitar then backs the vocal with some strummed chords before the keyboard motif reappears. Eric gets a chance to fire off a subtle guitar passage and you can almost sense that he was trying very hard not to allow the guitar to simply fly away. There is a meandering feel at times to this extended track, but that isn’t to say the listener is allowed to switch off. The passage of repeating the album title is almost trance like and demands attention. The guitar again has a long subdued passage with Aaron vocalizing at points rather than singing. This is a majestic 12+ minutes which is worth a 5 star review all on its own.

“Moonscape” moves seamlessly into the next track, “Bathed In Moonlight” (7:27) and this is simply Aaron’s voice, backed by excellent keyboard, effortless drumming, subtle bass and simple, but wonderful, guitar. Almost 7.5 minutes of heavenly, serene music to admire.

The last 2 tracks are classed as bonus tracks, one is an acoustic version of “Your Arms Hold Them To The Dark” (3:39) and the single version of the opening track, “Kissed By The Sun” (3:59)

Outer Light Inner Darkness is one of those albums that even on first hearing, you are aware that you are listening to something special. Repeated plays of this album simply make the satisfied smile wider and wider. The debut album was an amazing first release, but this release sees the band soar.

This album has certainly made me stop in my tracks, as my previous review (Kinetic Element) was my choice of release of the year, but Outer Light Inner Darkness, has now equaled that album. The Ancient One is extremely lucky to have reviewed 2 cracking albums one after the other.

My advice is to go out and buy Outer Light Inner Darkness as soon as possible and add one of the best albums of 2015 to your collection.
