Progressive Rock Review: Gazpacho-Demon

Release Date: 1stApril 2014 Label: Kscope Website
This was an interesting album to receive for review as I had been listening to it, and playing tracks on the radio show for a few weeks beforehand. Gazpacho, a progressive art rock band from Norway, has just released Demon, which is the 8th studio album to have been released since their debut album, Bravo, issued back in 2003. Regular readers of my review will have probably picked up on the fact that I am not comfortable with the constant need to squeeze a band into a particular labelled box, such as neo-prog (?) etc, but one critic described Gazpacho in a way that I find just a little bit over the top. The band were said to be “classical, post ambient, nocturnal, atmospheric, neo-progressive, folk, world rock, which should explain why I prefer to simply call it all, progressive rock.
Formed back in 1996 by childhood friends, Jon-Arne Vilbo (guitars, programming) and Thomas Anderson (keyboards, programming, producer), then Jan-Henrik Ohme …

Third World, One Of The Biggest Crossover Successes In Reggae Music, Returns With A Salute To The Hits Of Our Time!

Under The Magic Sun, An Incredible New Studio Album Featuring Superb And Inventive Versions Of Pop/Rock Classics To See Release June 10th On Cleopatra Records!

Los Angeles, CA – "Strictly a reggae band, no. Definitely a reggae band, yes." So said Bunny Rugs about his band, the legendary Third World. While the band formed in 1973, and developed during the golden era of Jamaican roots reggae, they were never myopic in their musical vision. Third World have also incorporated folk-pop, hard rock, bossa nova, rap, light pop-jazz, doo-wop and calypso into their songs over the years. Their style has been described as reggae fusion. Under The Magic Sun contains Third World’s interpretations of classic hit songs such as Bread’s “Everything I Own,” REO Speedwagon’s “I Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore,” CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain,” and more. Also included are new versions of the band’s own previous hits “96 Degrees” “Try Jah Love” & “Now That We Found Love.”

Asheville, NC - Possibly the most anticipated new release of 2014, My Kind O' Lovin' featuring drum legend Simon Phillips, Toto's Joseph Williams, and Ex-Uriah Heep/Lucifer's Friend's John Lawton, is now available! Released on the heels of 2012's hit album The Power Of Mind, featuring John Lawton, My Kind O' Lovin' is another innovative new CD, conceived, written and produced by the CGI member, and as of very recently European Citizen of the Year (2013) Dr. Milen Vrabevski. This next charity project of his is dedicated to young talents in EU.

Says Milen, “I allowed myself to play acoustic guitar in just the title song this time. Nothing else. The team was just too good for my level. Happy they liked the pieces. Many thanks to the guys I started this project with, and worked on the arrangements: Ivo Stefanov and Svurry, and to the whole all star band for their devotion.”

Pop/Rock Review: Roy Orbison-Mystery Girl Deluxe

Release Date: May 19, 2014
Label: Legacy Website
“The Big O” Roy Orbison is sorely missed. We could use a true star and talent like him to right the radio waves these days. His life was cut short but his legend continues to live on and gather momentum with each passing day. Mystery Girl was the album that reinvigorated Roy and was the beginning of new phase of his long and successful career. Unfortunately he was not around long enough to enjoy the success of the recording.

Mystery Girl Deluxe has been released by Legacy Music as a deluxe package with bonus tracks and a DVD. It will mark the 25th Anniversary of its release.

Much like The Traveling Wilbury’s that Roy was part of, the session brought together a cavalcade of stars such as George Harrison, Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty and others to make an already incredible talent more appealing. It was not like he needed the help; it was more the fact that everyone wanted to be involved with the man’s process. Who can blame them? He was revered and i…

Progressive Metal Review: Anubis Gate-Horizons

Release Date:April 15, 2014 Label: Nightmare Records Website
Anubis Gate markets themselves as “Denmark’s premier prog/powermetal band” and it is hard to argue with this statement after listening to their newest release, Horizons.I would also say that they would be considered a premier band no matter which country they call home, in fact.Following the success of 2011’s self-titled album, Horizons is not just a step in the right direction from Anubis Gate after their previous album, but it is also a step up, because this might just be their best work yet.
Even more impressive is that they have managed to stay so consistent quality wise, following the departure of two of their founding members. Guitarist Jesper M. Jensen left in 2012 and drummer Morten Sørensen departed a few months later.Anubis Gate’s current line-up stands as Kim Olesen (guitar, keyboards), Henrik Fevre (bass, lead vocals), Michael Bodin (guitar), and Morten Gade Sørensen (drums).Their chemistry must be very strong, as th…

Progressive Rock Review: Proud Peasant-Flight

Release Date: 26th May 2014
Label: Basement Avatar Records
I was very interested in this release when it landed on my desk as I had been aware of the band, Proud Peasant, via Twitter for quite a while. The album, Flight, after only one listen certainly does not disappoint. Proud Peasant is the brainchild of Zander Rapstine, who had previously been a founder member of the band The Evildoers, back in 2003, but after 8 years, he was looking for something different. In 2011, he turned his back on the pop/rock material of this previous band and strode purposefully towards his new direction that of classic prog rock, music he had loved since his late teens.

Xander had produced three lengthy compositions but included no vocals with the initial recordings, recordings that were inspired by such luminaries as Mike Oldfield, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Genesis. Late in 2011, the band, Proud Peasant, finally came into being. The band is a four piece comprising, Zander (electric/acoustic …

New Age Instrumental Review: Jennifer DeFrayne-By a Wire

Release Date: April 29, 2014 Label: Little Hartley Music Website
By a Wire is Jennifer DeFrayne’s debut album, but not the first time she has embraced the call of music in her life. A self-taught pianist, she was urged on by friends and neighbors to pursue her dream. Inspired early on by the natural landscape of her home in Laurium, Michigan she began the love affair with music that has carried her through thick and thin. Produced by Fiona Joy Hawkins and Will Ackerman at his Imaginary Road Studios, this first step to living her passion finds DeFrayne more than shining through a cloud covered sky. She is the silver lining and a ray of sunshine for so many. This album is a jewel for any connoisseur of New Age instrumental music.

“Hope Floats” is a melodious vision of the inner light that shines within us all. It illuminates our hearts in the darkest nights of the soul. Hope helps us turn from the shadows and bear up in the face of despair. As I listened to this piece, I couldn’t help but…
